Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume offered a rather direct analysis of Vice President Kamala Harris citing rural Americans being unable to access a Kinko’s to criticize voter ID, calling the decision “politically really stupid.”
The vice president was asked Friday during an interview with BET about a legislative compromise with Republicans on the Democrats’ stalled For the People Act, and she lamented that it’s “almost impossible” for rural Americans to photocopy their IDs.
“I don’t think that we should underestimate what that could mean, because, in some people’s mind, that means, ‘well, you’re gonna have to Xerox or photocopy your ID to send it in to prove that you are who you are,’” Harris said. “There are a whole lot of people, especially people who live in rural communities, who don’t — there’s no Kinko’s, there’s no Office Max near them. People have to understand that when we’re talking about voter ID laws, be clear about who you have in mind and what would be required of them to prove who they are. Of course, people have to prove who they are, but not in a way that makes it almost impossible for them to prove who they are.”
“This is a tricky issue for Democrats, they’re trying to make the most of it,” Hume said. “They’re trying to label Republicans as people who want to suppress the vote. But a number of the things that the Republicans want to do in the laws they are passing across the country are things that are popular, and voter I.D. is very high on that list.”
As for the stance taken by Harris, suffice it to say that Hume wasn’t impressed. Nor are some members of the Biden White House, he suggested.
“I think it’s politically really stupid to come out and criticize voter I.D,” the Fox News analyst said. “And I think, there are obviously people in the Biden White House who kind of wonder whether having Kamala Harris out in front on a lot of these issues has turned out to be a very good move. She seems at times lighter than air.”
In addition to President Joe Biden tapping Harris to lead the administration’s effort to “expand access” to the ballot box, she was also tasked with taking on the migrant crisis on the southern border with Mexico. After a long wait, Harris finally visited the border last month but was highly criticized for going to El Paso, Texas, which is far from the epicenter of the crisis.
Social media was relentless in going after Harris for her out-of-touch remark about rural voters.
One such tweet captured that sentiment: “Hi, I live on top of a mountain on the WV/VA border and I can photocopy my ID. I mean I do it while moonshining White Lightning while dueling banjos play in the background but I can still do it.”
