You obviously do not subscribe to the dictionary definition of "duffer." Without some adjective, the word has nothing specific to do with age. And while it may be true that a larger percentage of older Americans read newspapers than do those in younger age groups, the former do not by any means constitute the majority of newspaper readers. Newspaper publishers know where their bread is buttered, and in those few cases where a paper has cut Doonesbury, the resulting predictably massive protests have resulted in a reversal of that decision. Doonesbury rules! Let me know when Mallard's creator is put in for a Pulitzer. I won't be holding my breath.
