Is the $40 membership monthly / quarterly / yearly?

I had a membership at one time but it was a Christmas gift from my grandmother. She bought my husband and I a year membership and we just never got around to renewing it. We were newlyweds and still not watching our pennies like we should have been and ate out a lot. I now cook everynight and carefully shop for the best deals and would love to join Sams as long as its not $40 a month!
