Yes, they are public record.

No, you do not have to have been involved in the accident to obtain a copy of the report.

I know you can go down to the PD and get information about why someone was arrested and why they are in jail.

I deal with this several times a week. Here's the deal. Accident reports are indeed accessible to the public under most circumstances. Anyone can get a copy of the record with a couple of exceptions. I can think of one situation where sensitive information was involved and it had to be cleared before release. Hopefully that isn't the case here.

Normally any sensitive info is also redacted (CYA for the agency) so you are not going to see SSN data or complete DOB info. You may or may not get phone info. There is a form you have to fill out so you are going to need to know the date, location and parties involved. They are only $15 through ADPS. A driver's abstract is only $5.75 and will give you details of a driver's activities (accidents, tickets, etc.).

Just a note... this info is for dealing with the Alabama Department of Public Safety. If it is a fairly recent accident you should probably just go to the agency that worked the wreck and get the info.

I once walked in to my local police department and told them I wanted everything they had on someone and they gave it to me. They printed it out and marked out a couple of things and that was that. I did have to pay a small fee but it was worth it. I saw everytime they had been arrested or got a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt.

raine, I saw something the other night that freaked me out a little. On AOL you can go to White Pages and get someones address, phone number, other names they've gone by, previous addresses, and relatives names. Scary, I think. For instance, I know someone who changed her number to unlisted to stave off a semi-stalker, and now he can go on there and get everything BUT her phone number! And if someone has a few extra bucks, they can go online and do a total search on anybody. Including the addresses and phone numbers of your neighbors. Freaky deaky!

There is absolutely no anonymity on the Internet. If you want to know it, you can find it. Easily.

Salty, Have you ever googled your address? I have and it is quite scary... it will show pictures of your house and cars and everything... the pictures are somewhat old I think but if you have lived there for any amount of time the cars and stuff around the house are yours! The internet is very helpful but also very scary!
