"The Vatican was more cautious. In a statement Tuesday, it said Francis "didn't intend to perform any exorcism."

Father Urbain Grandier

Father Urbain Grandier

In 17th century France it was possible to be a political powerhouse, a ladies man and a Catholic priest. Father Grandier was enjoying the fruits of all three offices when he stepped on the toes of the all-powerful Cardinal Richelieu. Richelieu conspired with a convent of nuns who had been spurned by Grandier to ruin the man. The sexually-frustrated nuns feigned demonic possession and were exorcised in front of 7,000 people. On the heels of this show, Grandier was arrested, tortured, and forced to confess signing a pact with the demons who had purportedly possessed the nuns.

Would it be out of the realm of possibility that Pope Francis is an exorcist? No, of course not. Anyone who believes in the power of God must acknowledge the power of evil also. He (Francis) sure is making himself known, and seems very active- a pleasant change from the somewhat disengaged P Benedict. I'm excited about the future of our church!!
