G.FISH-
Do you put all your trust and faith in the AMA, CDC, and modern western medicine? Do you recognize that it has it's own fallacies, and naysayers within the profession itself? Do you also admit that thousands of times a week there are "reputable" physicians overprescribing unnecessary medications, totally misdiagnosing illnesses, and performing completely unnecessary operations? And they ARE within the guidelines of the AMA.
Or, do you have the same feelings toward 'regular dr's. that you do with alternative medicine?
Know matter what type of health care prof. I use, I take the following into consideration:
1- That they treat the illness, not simply mask the symptoms.
2- That they take into consideration what foods I consume, how much sleep I get and the quality of that sleep, what my habits may be, what supplements, OTC and prescription drugs I may be ingesting and whether I am swallowing chemicals like artificial sweeteners , dyes, and the like.
3- The stresses in my life.
4- Occurrences in my past, whether they be illnesses or accidents. Any traumtic events, physically or emotionally.
5- And that the method of treatment won't be worse for me than the problem we're trying to cure.

It seems like a common sense approach to me but I can't say that generally speaking, western medicine incorporates much of this criteria. For the most part, though, that is the approach of holistic, naturepathic (sp), and Eastern medicine.
I, for one, don't believe in Ch'i, Ying-Yang, or Meridians and have never had any discussion of such things with ANY alternative medicine provider.
I am curious if you are going to try to defend western medical practices or are you negative towards all forms of medicine?

1: Yes and no: I have no "faith" but I do have a certain amount of "trust" in modern medicine based solid scientific evidence.

Modern medicine is based on observable, measurable, solid science and reason. Acupuncture is still based on ying, yang, "meridians" and the supposition that there is a "life force" that can be changed by sticking needles in parts of an organ called "skin." This interruption of life force evidently results in cures for everything from cancer to neck pain to toe fungus.

The difference is that 100% of acupuncturists are either scam artists or willful "believers" of their ancient practice. Bad doctors and bad medicine are quite rare.

I always question what my doctor tells me. I become as knowledgeable as possible concerning every diagnosis and medicine pertaining to myself or a loved one.

Then you should not "believe" in acupuncture. Acupuncture "doctors" (who are NOT medically trained) have largely moved away from convincing people "Chi" and ying and yang because people are a little smarter these days. Still, acupuncture is absolutely based on these ancient notions. To claim otherwise is simply ignorant.

Don't be silly. I defend modern science, logic and reason. I do not believe in ancient superstition and pseudoscience.

This may be a stupid question (I can take the heat from it), but since you know people who have had acupuncture, do you know if the needles go in only skin deep or to they reach beyond (deeper than) the skin?

Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin You are too funny!

I had chiropractic work done over 7 years ago. I don't know a chiropractor where I live now. I may do that since the specialist said it is not my joint that is the problem, it is that I have a muscle that is going into spasms or stiffening and the muscle is pulling the jaw out of joint. That is why I thought the acupuncture might help, maybe to relax the muscles.

I appreciate all the input!!!
