Older Congressmen don't participate in Social Security under the old CSRS pension plan, unless they accumulated credits outside government service. Newer congressmen are under the FERS system which includes social security.

Either way, the list is a good guide for replacement of Senators next term.

". According to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service (CRS), a Member of Congress who retired at age 50, with 20 years of service would receive 42.5 percent of salary from a Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) annuity. The annual salary of a Member of Congress in 2006 is $165,200. At the end of FY 2005, there were 423 former Members of Congress on the Civil Service Retirement rolls; 305 retired under the CSRS; 118 retired under the FERS (most of those retiring under the FERS had switched from CSRS to FERS during the 1987 open season.). The FY 2005 average annual annuity paid to those retired under the CSRS was $58,944, or $34,896 under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS)."

note to small talker...

if senator chaffee of rhode island voted recently in favor of providing social security benefits to illegal aliens he is violating one of the most fundamental rules of the united states senate...to wit...you have to be a member...lincoln chafee lost his bid for reelection in november of 2006 to sheldon whitehouse. that is the bad news...now on the positive side...at least someone is taking the time to fully read what you are writing....
