If you have never spent the day winding your way through the byways in Etheridge, TN, you have really missed something special. Friday or Saturday, you will find all sorts of unbelievable buys when garden begin coming in. All sorts of vegetables, hand crafted furniture, molasses, braided rugs, peanut brittle, molasses cookies, quilts, hickory bent rockers, baskets, butter, chair bottom repair, just to name a few things. About twenty years ago, I bought a swing there made of ash and put together with screws. It has hung in my backyard all these years, and has not begun to wear except to turn a beautiful color of gray. I handed the man a twenty dollar bill, loaded it onto my pickup truck and brought it home, I have enjoyed it for many years. He is still making yard furniture. Treat yourself and go!

One more thing, when you pull into their yard, get out of your car and wait for them to come to you. During the height of the season, they have children outside watching for arrivals and they will run inside to get Mom or Dad. No cameras. Cash only. Signs are posted at the entrance of each farms to tell you what is available on that particular farm. You can buy beans, peas, tomatoes, etc. for canning. Corn for the freezer......
My family have visited the Amish several times, we too have a swing and other outdoor furniture, unfortunately for us it did cost more than twenty dollars. They do have really good food, we bought a freshly made pecan pie last year for five dollars, my daughter says it is the best ever. We were invited in one home to look at some merchandise they had, they had the most beautiful hardwood floors, but do not take their picture or attempt to go on the front porch unless invited.
Went to Ethridge again today. Sweet corn (peaches and cream) is now $2.00 a dozen (their dozen is always more than 12). Got a quart of homemade white hominy, a pint of homemade peanut butter, molasses cookies, home baked dinner rolls, squash, and green beans. Saw a couple of places that have fresh milk and eggs for sale. No peas yet. Plenty of squash, bell peppers, corn, tomatoes, green beans, onions, cabbage, lots of home canned stuff, baskets, quilts, furniture.........
Still making that weekly trip to Ethridge. This time I found the most beautiful, firm tomatoes for 35 cents a pound! You can't beat that anywhere. Brough back the usual corn (yellow for eating on the cob and white field corn for frying), tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, strawberry jam and blackberry jam. Just can't get enough. Winter will be here soon enough so I am taking advantage of all this good garden stuff while I can. Those people grow the most humongous blackberries I have ever seen!
