I'm on my third gallon.
When you give to Lifesouth during a Shoals Hospital drive, you get a tshirt, food coupon plus pizza, chick-fil-a, cookies, drinks, chips...and entered into a drawing for nice prizes. I won a George Foreman last year.
Dang, they are paying for plasma?! I used to donate plasma every 2 months at lifesouth (or platelets every month, depending on what they needed). I am AB+ and they have very little use for my blood, but they can use the plasma and platelets, so I would go and spend 90 minutes tied to that machine.

Then my daughter was born last year and I found out how valuable those 90 minutes really were. I hate that it has been over a year, but I guess I did it enough before to buy me a little forgiveness ;o)

i've had trouble giving before at times, too - iron too low, once i had not eaten and passed out, etc. (that was fun. i had a good dream in those few seconds! HA!)

you just gotta go back and try again. i doubt most healthy folks' iron stays so low all the time that it disqualifies them from giving. mine has been low a few times, but it didn't stop me from trying again.

come on, folks! buck up! all it takes is a little intestinal fortitude and remembering to eat real well or take a vitamin a few days in a row before you go. if your child ever needed blood, i bet you'd be knocking down the door to get in the place.

everybody is somebody's child, you know.

it's such a small inconvenience for those of us who are blessed with good health.

raine, I hear you honey!

When I was a senior in high school and 18 y/o, I gave blood 1st time @ a h.s. blood drive. I had no problem. I have been able to give blood one time since then. Every other attempt my iron is waaaaaay too low. I had to EXTRA multi vitamins for a month before I could have a routine surgical procedure done. I have pernicious anemia (sp?) and I probably won't ever be able to give blood - but I still try sometimes and my hat is off to those of you that do and I really appreciate you!!!!

I used to think the same thing until I found out that the red cross and lifesouth sells your donated blood for over 200 dollars to the hospitals. I have no problem selling my plasma but I am working on 14 gallons.

If you have been a blood donor then you are not billed for the blood (I'm not sure if the hospital is or not.)
