I love good Catfish and usually chose the filets over the whole catfish when given a choice.  What I'd like to ask is if anyone has tried both Walton's, Swamp John's and Lash's seafood restaurant's catfish?

Lash's is located in Fisherman's resort the small trailer/camping park that is just off Highway 101 and South of the Wheeler Dam.  Walton's also on 101 and then Swamp John's in Muscle Shoals as well as when they do cookouts for various events and Churches.  I've tried Swamp John's and to me, they have the best Catfish that I've had in the area but I've also heard that Walton's and Lash's are good but I  haven't heard from anyone that has actually eaten at the three locations and compared them.

As for my personal taste, I like Swamp Johns but Swamp Johns has reduced the size of their servings and increased their price at the same time but still, I believe offers a better bargain and bang for the buck than Newburns.  Newburn's is good but I don't like their breading near as well as Swamp Johns but Newburns Hushpuppies are better tasting to me.  I've also found that Champy's has very good Catfish filets but while it seems popular with many Homeside Restaurant on old Huntsville Rd may have good bargains but the taste of their product leaves a lot to be desired, at least in my mind.   Still holding the worst tasting Catfish record, as far as I'm concerned and from what I've had, is Cracker Barrel as their Catfish, from what I've had there, was inedible and totally a waste of money.

So for those that like Catfish where is the best places to find it in the Shoals area?

Swamp Johns has been inconsistent as of late. It seems to be hit or miss as far as freshness. Hot Rods on Church Rd has good fish but I wish they would use a little less cornmeal. Lately the best I've had is at Donna and Friends in MSC. Their service is very good too. They make you feel like family. I do love me some blackened catfish too Unc.

I wondered what Swamp John's had been going through and why.  I didn't notice the inconsistency in their catfish but I did notice that whereas before they were a way better deal than Newburns but lately they not only reduced the size portions of the fish they serve along with raising the price.  The individual catfish filets they serve may be a tad larger than they used to serve but today they serve three filets where they used to serve four and they charge you more money for those three than they did the four.

I haven't tried Hot Rod's but I do like the ambiance the restaurant provides it's customers and I hope they do a good job.  I also think that Champy's Chicken serves some very good Catfish filets, you might try them sometime as well.
