Big Oil--and Shell more than any other--has ruined Nigerian lands and waters beyond what most of us can only imagine. This is what happens when the industry goes essentially unregulated. Shell and others will tout their environmental consciousness when they are advertising and lobbying in nations where there is broad-based concern for the environment, but when they can go into developing nations or third-world nations and make sweet deals with dictators and do business essentially without regulation, they routinely and cabvalierly defile the environment.
