The recent discussion of Old Yeller got me to thinking about books I've enjoyed far more than the movie.
Books I like better include:
Wuthering Heights - book is far better than any of the movie versions although Laurence Olivier was a devastatingly gorgeous Heathcliff.

Old Yeller - I also liked the sequel, Savage Sam

Harry Potter 3 on - There's no way the movies can do J.K. Rowling's books justice. She's a master at her craft.

The Other Boleyn Girl - too much info for a 2 hour movie. The Tudors is much better.

Gone With The Wind and Twilight I liked equally well and I liked the Wizard of Oz movie far better than the book.

What are some of your faves?

With few exceptions, the book is almost always better than the movie, IMHO. I can point to many instances where the movie has done justice to the book (To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Rings), but only a few where the "movie" is better (Band of Brothers).

I agree you can't fully get a Harry Potter book onto the screen, but I think they did an excellent job of representing the books. With the time limit, they pretty much have to stick with the main plot and can't explore a lot of the descriptive details and side stories.
The Kite Runner. Why they would even try to take one of the best books ever written and do a movie of it is beyond reason. The movie might have even been good if I hadn't read the book. The cinematography was fantastic in the movie.

I did like what they did with the movie version of "Secret Life of Bees." But again, they just really couldn't do justice to the book.

Agree on this one. I was so excited for that movie because I got hooked on all those Phillippa Gregory books. But they missed the whole point of the book and tried to do a remake of "Anne of The Thousand Days," which still can't be beat.

in a movie you only "see" what is happening and miss that personal aspect.

I disagree. A good screenwriter and a good actor can put a viewer in the character's place.

I saw a scene on the Sopranos where Tony was sitting in the nursing home talking to his uncle who has Alzheimer's. When the uncle thought Tony was his dad, Tony merely stared and without dialogue, I knew Tony was fearing this would happen to him, he was realizing he was now the undisputed head of the family and shouldering all the responsibilities that entailed, and he was recalling the past. None of this was ever mentioned but was brought out very poignantly by James Gandolfini's acting and the stellar script writers.

No wonder the Sopranos won so many awards.

The movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark was ten times better than the book. I also like the Jack Ryan movies better than Clancy's books. He goes into too much detail about stuff I'd rather watch than read about.
I finally saw Twilight!

The movie was not disappointing at all...BUT they left out (alot). I'm sure it was for times sake, but I wouldn't mind a bit if the movie was a little longer. The movie failed to build up thier relationship as the book did. It seemed really fast paced as where the book was slower, which I loved. Anyway, can't wait until the next movie comes out. I am re reading the series now.
9 times out of 10 I will say the book was way better than the movie... but one instance I won't is... Forrest Gump. The movie is WAY better than the actual book it was based on, it's actually rather different.

It's possible that I like the movie better because I watched it BEFORE reading the book. But I doubt it.

I will say that Fight Club was an excellent book, and I truly enjoy the movie, but again the book is better.

I think this is because most of the time I enjoy my own imagination creating the pictures for me when reading vs. it given to me so easily.

They did a good job of translating the first one from book to screen. BTW - I heard they're letting that twerp play Jacob again. Grrr. I'd hoped they'd get someone to drool over. (as if it's not enough to drool over Carlisle, Edward, and Jasper)
