After you get your casket from Walmart, you will still have to negotiate services with your local ghoul (funeral director), who might not be very happy with your having bought a major funeral item from someone else. He might decide to hike the prices for the rest of his services to help make up the difference.

Fast delivery is available on that Walmart casket. Can't wait around too long to put that old corpse in the ground, ya know! See link below.

I plan to be cremated or to donate my body to science and avoid much of the Grand Old American Funeral Dance.

More info--from Fox News online:

"The move gives more power to consumers and helps them avoid high mark-ups on caskets, which can often be several hundred percent, said R. Brian Burkhardt, a funeral director who blogs as "Your Funeral Guy."

You can get a quality casket for $1,000 rather than pay $2,000, $3,000 or $5,000 in a funeral home. That's where it helps the consumer," he said."

betternu's statement is sad but true. Funeral homes will get you one way or the other. I had a relative at a small funeral home on the East end of the county. The funeral home was trying to sell them memorial candles with my dead relatives picture on it and keychains with pictures and dvds. They tried to sell them everything from those souveniers to flowers made on site. My relatives said no thanks to everything but the flowers and after they saw them they wished they had passed on them to.
After me and my family got home we all made each other promise that no matter which one of us went first the others wouldn't set up no souvenier stand or buy flowers from a funeral home. Hope we don't have to do none of that no time soon.
I saw this a while back and thought it was kinda creepy but with what the funeral homes charge I can see the appeal.

I imagine a Wal Mart funeral chapel sometime in the future. With a picture of Sam Walton hanging in the lobby. Smiler

All jokes aside I bet you really can save some money on a casket this way. I guess you just have it shipped straight to the funeral home.

I want to be cremated too but my family is completely against it. I guess if I don't leave behind a will with my wishes stated I will be buried in the family plot if they have their way.

You have to remember that it's just an empty body. Your loved one has moved on.
I, too, prefer cremation. Mainly because I have seen too many scary movies with people buried alive, zombies, etc. etc. My husband isn't so sure about cremation - he calls it being "pre-heated!" What a wit.
Lynn, that plain white casket would have "Great Value" printed on the side!
Joy, you can put the coffin in the living room and use it for a coffee table until you need it.
My brother was cremated and we had no services of any kind and it was still a little over $2,000. You have to buy an approved container to cremate them in. What a ripoff.
I checked with Morrison ( can I say that here?) about cremation.First of all I have 2 plots payed for in Oakwood/ Tuscumbia. I feel funeral are such a rip off and believe it would be easier on my grandchildren to not go through all the viewing and visitation stuff. I learned this funral home does the cremation for $I,895.00 ( today's price). My question is... does this sound like the normal/ regular price when compare to other companies? I want to pre-pay so my kids won't have any burden. I just want the best deal. Now, surely they can light a fire cheaper than that! LOL..If I had my ashes sprinkled in my yard( home is paid for) that would saave the cost od the back-hoe and be as simomple as can be. I live in Tuscumbia and I'm not sure about cty ordinances, however the lady at the Funeral home assured me it is legal statewide.Any input on this is greatly appreciated. What are your thoughts ANYONE??? Advice appreciated very much.

LOL!

Just, that sounds really high...had a family member who chose to be cremated about 2 years ago & don't think it was anywhere near that.

I, too, prefer to be cremated, but if I go before my Mom, it will have to be a regular burial. She flipped out when we were all discussing it & asked me not to do that. Smiler It has something to do with a Bible verse. I figure God can surely turn my ashes into something spectacular. I mean, think about what he's working with if I'm not cremated. Ew.

Yeah, that's my point in my question. Thank you for your reply Smiler I would like to know what others think about this and maybe some who have had dealings with cremation of their family members. Maybe I should have made a poll.....LOL Anyway, this is something important and has been on my mind a lot. Anyone care to contribute to the Creamation Info.?? You know I realize I should have started a new topic about cremation, sorry I didn't do that. Any info is greatly appreciated. Smiler
About the Bible reference, the only references I can find seem to indicate that burning the bones/bodies of enemies was disrespectful or something. In the New Testament emphasis is on our bodies being vessels for our souls and they are temporary. Anyhow, think of all the people who have been dead for centuries and they have nothing left of their earthly bodies. We're just speeding the process up by cremation.
I checked with the health department before we scattered my brother's ashes (cremains). It is illegal to scatter them because they feel there might be some disease that survives the crematory. So you have to do it quietly and in a remote area or at least when nobody sees you. They know it goes on, they just have to tell you the official standing on it.
I want my ashes split up between what friends I have still living (we argue about who will outlive all the others!), and they are to go scatter them in a place that means something to us both. Outdoors, of course!

I guess that's not so bad. Like someone else said I think you are also paying for an urn of some sort to be put in. I do know the average funeral is $6,000 and up. So, it is definitely the cheaper way to go. (pun intended.) Smiler

Found out when my Mom died a few years ago (she had requested cremation)that if you are married, the spouse gets the final say (hopefully they will honor your decision on burial), but if you are not married and only have children and want to be cremated, then ALL the children have to agree to it. They have to sign a paper stating they agree or it's a no-go.

My Dad had died years ago, so it was up to us 4 kids to make Mom's arrangements. My oldest sister lives out of state, so the funeral home faxed her the form, she signed it, and faxed it back. Then there was my idiot older alcoholic bum brother who probably would not have agreed to it just to tick me off. I told the guy at the funeral home that I had no idea where my brother was (which I didn't.... he lived in Sheffield, but would never come to the door when any of us went by there or would disappear for days on end, only to call me or my other sister saying he needed bail money, which we never supplied him with). The funeral director gave me the paper and said, "We need A SIGNATURE (emphasizing the "a signature" part)on it" and gave me a little "look". I called my ex that night and told him what was happening and asked if any of his cop buddies had any idea where the idiot might be. He asked if it needed to be notarized. I told him no so he said, "Bring it to me.... I'll sign his name and they will never know. It was what your Mom wanted and nothing should stand in the way of it, especially HIM being petty and childish because he's mad at you" (he didn't actually use the term "petty and childish", he used a slang term for a male body part) Wink . So, the ex signed it, me and my other sister signed it, and Mom's wishes were carried out. It seems that when something like this happens, most of the time there is always ONE person in the family that does something just to be stupid and cause problems. Hope that doesn't happen with your bunch, Dark Dreamer.

By the time anyone located your will it would be too late. If you want to be an organ donor, have it put on your driver's license. If you don't need a new license anytime soon, you can get an organ donor sticker from the probate office to put on your license.
