I am not one to be shocked at the lack of cell phone etiquette most people have. I see them at the movies. They might be set to vibrate but the screen is brighter than the movie. I see the drivers oblivious to using a turn signal or letting people merge. I've sat next to someone at a restaurant who is chatting away.

Last week I saw a new low. I stop for a bit to eat at a Chinese restaurant and the host proceeded to seat me while talking on the phone. They didn't make eye contact with me once.

I thought about it afterwards and I should have made my stand and refused to be sat by someone chatting on a cell phone. Next time I'll be better prepared. I think we should all make a resolution not to be waited on or helped in a retail/service establishment without having the representative's full attention.

I agree cell phone ettiquette is at an all time low..
PR I think you showed better restraint than I would had..I would have showed out and then left ( I guess Im becoming more like my dad everyday )....I have never experienced that at a restaurant but I have in other situations...

One time while getting the oil changed I had a tech get a phone call..He ask if I would exuse him because his wife was 9 months Pregnant ..I had absolutey no problem with this ...He at least asked me to exuse him for his call...
You know those ear pieces that make it look like a person is talking to themselves when they are on their cell phone?

The other day it was really quiet in the store I was in & the only other customer is right beside me. She suddenly explodes with laughter. I almost jumped out of my skin. Then I see the ear piece & return to ground level. I wonder if she knows how close she came to my catlike reflexes exuding themselves. JK!

PR, I would have been more offended that there was Chinese food in my plate rather than a decent steak. Next time you might try flashing them. You know, just a suggestion. Wink

Thanks to the handsfree Bluetooths a lot of people no longer speak when spoken to because they assume the speaker is talking to someone else... and they wind up being thought of as rude...lol.

Good for you wearing your Bluetooth. I keep my phone on speaker so I don't have to hold it. I have tried a bluetooth but it bother's my ear.

It bothered me at first but after wearing it a couple of times, I forget I even have it on. It's great.
I was laughing about this today! I had lost my electronic leash and was trying to leave out of town Friday. I started freaking out. How did I live before this thing. It sleeps beside me (charging) it is by my side all day. I read an email that said What if people treated thier bible like they did their cell phone. Ouch! that hurt! I am letting my phone go a bit more! This weekend my phone will let others know "I am unavailable to take your call at this time!".

FREEDOM!! Big Grin

It's funny, I remember when cell phones were very new technology and using one in public was kind of a "status symbol".

And those stupid ear things? They aren't "cool" anymore. Please, people, they make you look like a Borg.

mine is for car use only...i feel stupid walking around in public looking like i'm talking to myself.

If they speak at the same level as any two people at a table, no problem. However, 9 times out of 10, they are not using their "inside voices". There's a etiquette tip from preschool...haha. I'm not sure if they are deaf, have a bad signal or just real proud to have a cell phone. It's annoying whatever their reasons though.

I couldn't agree with you more, HR.
If more people would mind their own business,
and stop worrying so much about what other people are saying or doing,
they would have more time to worry about themselves, and figure out what their "real" problems are.

As a mother, a daughter with sick parents & grandparents, I could be needed at any given time, and when my cell phone rings, I am going to answer it, no matter where I am at, or who doesn't like it.
Cause you never know what might happen, and I'd hate to think that "etiquette" prevented me from answering a very important call !!

Step into the twentieth Century People!
It's true that people tend to talk loud when on a cell phone for whatever reason. I recently heard a lady, while we were having dinner, tell her boyfriend that she was having his baby & asked what he was going to do about it. She evidently didn't like what he said, everyone in the restaurant could hear the chewing out she gave him.
I would have liked to enjoy my dinner without hearing her.

The cure for that, telepathic chat, is on the way.

Excerpt: "A neckband that translates thought into speech by picking up nerve signals has been used to demonstrate a "voiceless" phone call for the first time. With careful training a person can send nerve signals to their vocal cords without making a sound. These signals are picked up by the neckband and relayed wirelessly to a computer that converts them into words spoken by a computerized voice."

You better not be thinking one thing, and mean another!!! Like when your boss says "can you get this done by lunch?" and you're thinking "sure you crazy SOB, as long as I can find my super-powers" but you say "of course I can". That little thought-phone would suck in that sort of situation! Big Grin
