I am considering changing companies and am seeking suggestions as to which provides the best service in our area. I'd be willing to pay a little more for better coverage.

Cingular and (the new) AT&T have merged. The Cingular name is being dropped sometime this year. Check out the Cingular or AT&T website for more info.
Not sure if they are in the Shoals but AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE Alltel. They have screwed me over before in the past, do not keep good records, and tried to nail me with charges/late fees that were not my fault. THey dropped, then added back, to my credit report the goof they did t me back in 2000-2001. It showed up again on my credit report in 2003, I called them, they said they would take care of it, it fell off, then reappeared in late 2004. The collection agency I talked to when I found out it was in collections told me over half of the collection issues they have are with companies that do not keep good billing records at the coporate office. It took a threatening phone call with the threat of legal action by me in order to get it removed. Oh, the phone call was left on their VP's voice mail, as they never returned my calls, or I got the run around when I got the "Press _ for _ " message. Alltel is BAD folks. Avoid them, not to mention, they are too expensive.

What a jerk around, They just wanted me to buy new phones because I was an old ATT customer. I guess those would have been junk and I would have had have to scrap the Cingular phones for ATT again. I am real happy with ATT/Cingular. I always use www.gsmliberty to unlock my phones so that they are not branded and I can use in other countrys, if you have a cool expensive phone and switch companys you can unlock for about 20 bucks and keep the good phone.
I've been with Cingular since 1999 (i think it was bellsouth then) and though i've had a few problems they haven't been so bad that i would switch service since they all seem to have their problems.

I have been with cingular for 7 years now and I have had no problems with them.If you order your phone online you can get some of them free with a two year agreement and shipping is free also.I have never paid for a phone through cingular and I have four lines with them.You can also upgrade every two years and get another free phone if you desire.
Cingular 
I use Verizon, the only gripe I have is there is sometimes dead spot around foodland in Green Hill until you hit the Loretto tower.
Switched to Verizon from Cingular about 4 years ago. Best thing I ever did. Verizon customer service is great. With cingular I used to have calls dropped traveling down Woodward Ave. Now I don't have that problem.
