That's what I thought too. I'd have at the least questioned my child more, to see if I could get the entire story, and called the police, told them, and asked for a "wellness check" on  the kids. The entire neighborhood should have let the parents know they were watching. In Huntsville, a few years ago, a woman starved her kids to death in an apartment complex and no one knew. Those kids had family and a father that claimed they tried to check on them, but they didn't go far enough.

Police: Woman says she starved children to death

Alabama mother charged with killing her 3 kids

(CNN)  -- A Huntsville, Alabama, woman charged with capital murder in the deaths of her three children told investigators she "deliberately starved her children to death," a police spokesman said Saturday.

Natashay Yvonne Ward, 33, is charged with killing Shanieka Y. Ward, 11; Latricia Ward, 9; and Christopher O. Ward, 8.

"She told investigators that she deliberately starved her children to death. They did appear to be malnourished," Wendell Johnson of the Huntsville police said. Autopsies will determine how and when they died, he said.

I remember this story well. It's heartbreaking how nobody knew what was going on till it was too late.

A lot of times people just don't want to get involved. I can understand that to a certain extent but if I knew that a child was in imminent danger I'd have to do something. Even if it was just making an anonymous phone call to authorities.

I guess the neighbor wasn't an idiot after all. Seems law enforcement was.

"Golden said she told a police officer who lives in their neighborhood that her son saw the kids chained up in the backyard, but couldn’t get him to listen to her and no one could ever find proof".

“Me and neighbors around the corner have been trying to get this out and no one would listen to us.”

I remember that one.  I was living in Huntsville at the time, and after the news came out that her utilities had been turned off for a few months (in winter!), Huntsville Utilities started including a note along with the monthly bill.  It said something to the effect of, "If you can't pay your bill, contact us to negotiate something so we won't cut your utilities."
