I ate at City Hardware today for the first time in a couple of mos. and it seems to have gone somewhat downhill.

I was greeted by a hostess wearing a grubby pair of jeans and flip flops.  Not a good first impression.

Wait and kitchen staff were in little huddles socializing in loud voices.  The kitchen staff's appearance was grubby to the point wondering if their food prep was as bad as their dress.  Not a good impression especially for an open kitchen. They were also very loud.

My entrÉe was not prepared properly. It did not even match the description of it found on the menu.

The whole place reminded me of a bunch of college kids run amok.  They need some adult supervision.

Has anyone else had this experience lately or was it just a one off at a usually nice place to eat?

We tried City Hardware.  The staff, except for the hostess who wore a dress, were dressed in blacks T-shirts with their logo and black pants, no flip-flops.

There are a few points that could be improved upon.  They offer several retro-cocktails, which, while tasty, could be improved.  However, I don't expect the high quality one would expect at the cocktail centric lounges like Amendment XXI in Huntsville, the PX bar in DC or the Temple in NYC. However, City doesn't charge their high prices, either.

We shared an appetizer -- deviled eggs with crabmeat -- tasty and as advertised. I would use a spicier mustard, but that's just my taste.  We had the pan fried grouper -- pretty much as advertised and good.  However, the rice was plain and not herbed, jasmine rice as advertised.

We enjoyed the meal and will return.

If the question is about Rick, the owner, I don't know what the rumors are but I've always seen him with his wife, or lady friend, as he dined at Outback Steakhouse (which he does often) or works out that the YMCA weekly.  So if there is any question about who he's out with I can testify that everytime I've seen him out it's been with an attractive lady which by all indications he's very attracted to and intimately acquainted with.  As to if they are married or whatever the relationship is between them I can't say I know but although he's certainly strange in many ways I've never observed any behavior that would make me believe or doubt he's heterosexual.  Not that it matters because I don't believe it would have any bearing on his ability to run a restaurant either way.

I wondered that myself.

Some people seem to see that issue in everything.  I guess it's a very personal issue for them.

I don't know either. Popeye said he doesn't support gay business owners. Rick Elliott isn't even gay.
