It would no doubt strengthen the area, but I think too many people would not want to let go of 'their' town for a greater metro govt. Too much corruption and small town politics.
10yrs ago or so, that was attempted for Madison/HSV. Madison wouldn't let it happen. Since then, HSV has annexed land AROUND Madison, and many people see how opportunity may have been lost.

I would love to see that and also to see Hwy 157 to Cullman become limited access. I hope that also continues with 72 to Memphis.
I guess it depends upon how many more stoplights they think it would take.

I think it is a great idea, but never going to happen, the "older crowd" around here absolutely refuses to beleive that any good would come of it. That river is awfully deep and WIDE.

This would be good for me, I still don't know where Tuscumbia and Sheffield and Muscle Shoals start and end.
It IS one metro area.
Florence will never join, too complicated being in another county, across the river, and it has no need to.
I wouldn't mind seeing the Tri Cities merge, but I wouldn't bet on it.
If it does, it'll be called "Tuscumbia".

I doubt if it will happen because it would mean that Muscle Shoals would take on the financial problems of T and S.
May be a good start for T and S to merge, but you gotta get rid of that dammed rail road.

Don't blame the "older crowd" for the debacle of nongrowth in the Shoals area! I am in the "older" category, and know that this idea has been around for at least the last 40 years.
It has also been shot down for the last 40 years!
There are two groups who are to blame for the failure of the Shoals area; the small group of families and their associates who wield all the power, and the voters who listen to their party and union bosses to perpetuate the strangle hold of the first group! There is just too much money going under too many tables on both sides of the river for anything short of a mini-revolution, or a massive Federal investigation, for anything more than the piecemeal 'good news' we occasionally get for anything to ever change in this area!
I voted yes, but I don't think it will ever be possible to merge all 4 cities into one. Like has been said, Florence being in a different county is a major hindrance, unless the two counties themselves consolidate. I do think combined police/fire departments would be a good start, with other services following over time. I've noticed here in Chattanooga that there are no "city" and "county" school boards, just one board for the entire county. Seems a lot of waste in both counties could be eliminated if the 6 current boards are merged into 2. Then again, this would surely eliminate jobs and that is always a sticky situation.
