KITTERY, Maine — A man with the distinction of having been arrested 153 times was arrested again Monday night on a felony alleging the theft of beer.

Paul Baldwin, 49, who told police he lives on Brewster Street in Portsmouth, was charged with theft and for outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court for theft, said Chief Ed Strong. Baldwin was taken into custody after surveillance images showed him stealing two 18-packs and a 12-pack of beer from a convenience store, said Strong.

In June of 2009, Portsmouth police arrested Baldwin for the 153rd time, a week after he completed a one-year jail sentence for stealing a $1.99 can of beer.

During the arraignment for his 152nd arrest, Baldwin was held on $10,000 cash bail for stealing the can of beer and was described by then-prosecutor Corey MacDonald as “a leech on the resources of this community.”

“I don't need a lawyer,” Baldwin told Judge Sawako Gardner at the time. “I've been in this court more than you have.”

MacDonald cited Baldwin's criminal history as including 152 arrests, eight trespass notices, 75 citations, four different social security aliases and convictions for thefts, receiving stolen property, arson and criminal mischief.

"I sure feel a lot more like I do now than when I first got here"
