From Hwy 72, in Killen, up Hwy 43 toward Tennessee and near Rogers School at 8043 Hwy 43 is Curtis Restaurant which I had just learned about earlier in the week. I had passed it many times but never thought to investigate it and see what people thought. Today I tried Curtis Restaurant for the first time and I'm glad I did. In questioning about their menu I found out that their hamburgers are cooked fresh from fresh ground beef and not frozen patties, something that is important to me. I was going to have the large shrimp plate given that they hand batter the shrimp and I was glad to hear they weren't pulled from the freezer and prepared. Instead, I chose to pick the smaller 6pc butterfly shrimp and added a single catfish filet. The meal came with crinkle cut fries and slaw but since I don't like slaw I chose to add extra hush puppies.
Although I cannot say that the shrimp or the catfish filet was the best I have had but it was certainly very tasty and I liked the catfish better than Newbern's and their large catfish plate comes with 3 large catfish filets and for less than you will pay at Newbern's. The shrimp was also tasty and although I believe the best butterfly shrimp is found at Georges Steak Pit in Sheffield Curtis shrimp is far more affordable and taste very good.
I will certainly be back to Curtis Restaurant and may try one of their ribeyes next time since I was informed that the steaks are chargrilled rather than on a flat grill as some places use or I might try one of their hand-formed hamburger patties. At the time I was there-there was enough patrons to fill all the booths and tables in the front dining room but there was plenty of room in a rear dining room so I doubt there will be a problem finding an available seat. Different people have different taste but I am confident that most will find Curtis Restaurant a nice place to dine.
