Mobile County officials poised to vote against ‘constitutional carry’ legislation

Mobile County Commissioners are poised to support a resolution backed by Sheriff Sam Cochran opposing legislation that could rid Alabama gun owners of having to purchase a permit to carry concealed handguns.

The two Republican commissioners – Connie Hudson and Randall Dueitt -- said Wednesday that they are likely to back Cochran’s request when it comes up for a vote during the commission’s December 28 meeting.

Revenue

Sorrell and Stringer say they believe the issue boils down to revenue coming to the Sheriff’s Department from the annual permits, around $1.2 million each year for the Mobile County Sheriff’s Department. The money is used to purchase equipment and upgrade technology for deputies, or to start up new anti-crime initiatives such as drug testing programs at Mobile County Public Schools.

The two lawmakers believe that Cochran is overinflating the impact of the revenue hit, with Sorrell saying that county commissions “are afraid if there is a drop in pistol permit revenues, they will have to pick up the tab and they don’t want to pick up the tab. My guess is it’s about the money for these commissioners.”

red state identity politics run amok

Sorrell told AL.com he would be supportive of Stringer’s HB6 if it was given consideration over his proposal. Sorrell said he sympathized with his fellow colleague who described as having “bled for the cause” by losing his job with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. Sorrell said that Stringer was basically “punished for his political beliefs.”

a poll tax? good grief lol

Sorrell said the issue is about adhering to the Constitution without having to pay for it. He likened gun permits to a poll tax, saying “Should it be about the money? No. The Constitution says the right to keep and bear arms should not be infringed. We don’t charge people for the right to free speech or the right to vote.”

He added, “This is basically a poll tax. You have a constitutional right as long as you pay your sheriff for it.”

if constitutional carry is allowed (it should be), there needs to be classes. To many are ignorant on guns, laws and common sense.  I am a licensed carrier, the class I took opened my eyes to a bunch.  I pray I never have to use, not just shooting someone, however the legal system,  Just look at what Rittenhouse went thru.

I only carry when with family.  For their protection.

I've been EDCing constantly for almost 40 years, either as a civilian or an LEO. Even when an LEO I maintained a valid CCW permit. Believe it it not, in some states my CCW permit 'carried more weight' than my badge.

The biggest issue with 'Constitutional Carry' is the lack of CCW permit reciprocity between states. I have an Alabama CCW permit. It is honored in every state in which I currently travel, or am likely to. In some states, mere possession of a concealed firearm (on person or in vehicle) is a misdemeanor (Alabama, for example). However, in others (Florida, for example), doing so is a FELONY.  While I understand the idea behind Constitutional Carry, I prefer to keep my CCW permit.
