NO. It is a case of it being downright absurd to locate a wastre disposal facility in such an environmentally vulnerable place. And would YOU buy 158 acres and a $1.8 million building if all you needed was 25 or 30 acres of additional landfill space? That is all the city says they need.

See if you can 'splain THAT??!!
Why do some people think that expanding the landfill at its present location is the only option? It's not a matter of dump or no dump, but rather where the dump is. For a $2m purchase price, there have got to be plenty of alternative locations.

I also fail to understand why the city's trash can't go to the same place as the county's. Why does the city need to have a separate dump?

Call around, compare the trash pickup rates in close proximity to Florence.

These are questions I'd like to hear the Council answer for all of us. Give us facts, please, because I just don't get it!
Why can't we go Metro? Why can't the city and the county get together and use the landfill in Petersville that the county runs? Is this a battle between the county commissioners and the city council? Would this be a consolidation of two outdated political kingdoms? This would cut cost for the county and the city and make sense. This is 2009...not 1959!

You're absolutely correct, but it won't happen in my lifetime -- and I'm not that old . . .

I disagree with the city, but I live in the county, so they wouldn't listen to me anyway. FTR, the county commission has at least one horse's patoot if not more.

The county landfill receives demolition waste and other non-putrescible wastes, but is not licensed to receive the variety of wastes that the city landfill is authorized to accept. Lauderdale County has its garbage-type waste shipped out for disposal outside the county.
