I just listen to the council meeting via. recording. I agree with Angie 100% that UNA students needs some entertainment here, along with other people, we need nightclubs here, maybe five or six for the students to have a place to go to. We need more night life here in the Shoals. But then again I also see Mr. Pendleton's and Mr. Howard's point of view, controlling it, we do not want a skid row downtown either, you are kidding yourself if for one moment that if we don't have controll over it and a shooting breaks out, that the churches in this area will have a petition out so fast to make your head spin to vote this place back dry. My opinion, yes let's get a few nice nightclubs so the UNA students can have something to do, and yes let's see that it is under controll to the highest degree.

A proper "music hall" would probably do great as well. You know, something that could hold between 300-500 people.

The Keynote Room is down there, but it's non-smoking which doesn't really add to the atmosphere of a rock show.

I'm not a smoker myself, but I know it deters some people from going to shows in non-smoking venues.

That is SO easy to control. If a business (or lo9unge) generates "X" many fights, brawls, or general devilment, then they get to meet in front of a committee that will decide whether or not they get to keep their license.

Florence can put lounges on as short a leash as they want but give the kids (AND US OLD FOLKS) and nice place to go and have a DRAFT BEER.

Let the day belong to the old folks and the nights belong to the kids. It works wonderfully elsewhere. Why not here?
Yeah Florence is about as boring as you can get. the older people think that everyone should be in bed by 8:00.But the thing is if Florence don't get something for the younger people.and they start leaving here. And Florence is left with a lot of older people who is going to be around to take care of them when they cant take care of themselfs.
Some great music venues (jazz, folk, rock,...) would be excellent. They can serve drinks and munchies and probably would be seen as less threatening by those who offend easily.

And, let's not forget the comedy clubs! They are a blast!

Also, there needs to be a full time movie theater and a nice late night dessert cafe.
Me being the party goer I am, I think Florence could support 3 to 4 nightclubs and have them all under control . Its the way you handle situations. For one, you can't be our friends; when we cause a problem the cops who work at the clubs or patrols them can't be like - "calm down just have a good time" they need to be like "LEAVE OR YOUR GOING TO JAIL" . They need to bar anyone who causes problems (not 5 or 6 chances just 2) from ever coming back. I know how it goes, you have people that just show off and they have to do something different every weekend . Then he shoots someone and it all could have been stopped if they told him to never come back . You have to set an example. Second, you can't harass people . Drinking and Driving , yes its a no-no , but you can't hang around clubs ducked off or up patrol after 2 am and pull everything over on 4 wheels . People will be scared to go anywhere. And the bottom line is where there is a club people will go, where there is beer people will go . I am just saying even if Florence didn't have any of these, people will still do it.
I say they are crazy for not keeping the money in the Shoals Area... more taxes for them, only makes sense they let the people have what they want.... they would profit from it no doubt.

Don't forget about the fines and court cost they'd make on the ones that did get outta hand! Wink

Of course I think it should be top priority to keep these places safe and secure... so some cop could moonlight and make a lil extra dough doing security at each establishment. Now this is nightclubs I'm talking about... it's inevitable that some people will have too much to drink... and the city should support these establishments as necessary.

Why make the business or lounge appear before the committee... make the FIGHTERS appear before the committee...

Everyone entering an establishment that has rules and alcohol KNOWS that fighting HAS to be one of the rules... if they break it, THEY go before the committee. A business owner cannot watch every single person all the time.

Everyone who walks into the door of an establishment like that knows when they go into it WHAT it is, and WHAT can happen if they partake too much... so each person should be accountable for their actions.

That would be as bad as saying that if someone shop-lifts off of a store shelf, the store owner should be hauled in before a committee to see why, ... ...

Actually, your analogy is not the same type of circumstance. For the bar owner to go in front of the committee, they would have to have excessive trouble (fights) at their establishment. Hence, not controlling the crowd. That is the purpose, the fighters will have to face the police.

Think of the revenues the cities are missing. Revenue that could go to police and firemen's pay raises. Moonlighting is a bonus, of course.

You make a very good point... and if one wants to have a few too many, then they need to make sure they have a DRIVER FIRST... then everything would be cool...

Some people LIKE to fight when they drink, and there is no way for any business owner to know that beforehand unless that person has done it before in his/her business, ... that being the case, BAN THEM FROM COMING IN THERE... otherwise, open the businesses, get the revenue, and pray for the best.
I am out listening to live music at least two nights a week, sometimes more, at various local establishments, and I can count on one hand the number of fights I have seen take place over the last five and a half years. It's not that big of a problem. I'm not counting Big Ed's because, frankly, I thought the place sucked a big egg so I never went back.

People could smoke, drink draft beer, play music -- not too loud, and not disturb the public. As hardshell baptists and CofCers go by they can imaigine the sin vicariously.

And those that are vegetarians can go by steak houses and vicariously enjoy the wickedness of people having a cow! Or, they can have a cow, as the PETA cranks are somewhat inclined to do.

Vicarious enjoyment of sin is non-caloric.

Overpaid for amount of work done.... hmmmmmmm, well, just remember, that it only takes a few seconds for them to get into an altercation and have their brains blown out, keeping YOUR streets safe.. Roll Eyes

I have no idea what this has to do with this topic but, anywhoo.....Every human has their own personal downfalls and temptations when it comes to following Christ. To one it might be material things and to another lust or stealing. God knows your heart. I dont beleive from what I have studied that God expects us to live in a box. He wants to bless us. But, when the opportunity comes about to help others that we do so with a cheerful heart.
#1 - I dont follow what 1 church says. I try to follow what the Bible says. That is Gods word to me. I am not a judge of ANYONE. There is not a denomination, group, church family, religion that I would say is going to H*ll. If a person of accountable age reads the Bible and chooses to do something that the Bible says is a sin, and that is between God and that person. God knows that we are human and make mistakes and sin everyday. Its your beleif in Him that saves you and sets you apart from the world. It amazes me to hear people have such a negative view of Christianity.........makes me wonder where people grew up and what church they went to. I really am sorry for those that have been to churches that give you such a negative look on who God really is ........because simply put, He is love

While we are off the topic... Well said STOI! We should do it with a cheerful heart, expecting nothing in return and not going around bragging about what a great person we are because we helped someone. God sees it all and there is no need to call anyone else's attention to our good deeds. It kills me how the only reason some people help others is so that they can pat themselves on the back for being such a wonderful person. I'm no biblical scholar by any means, but there is a quote somewhere about not letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing that applies here. Amen.

I agree!!!
I think a trendy late-night coffee shop where live singers/songwriters can come and perform as a venue would be very successful with the 20something crowd. Something locally owned, not a chain of some sort.

I don't drink coffee, but I love the singer/songwriter stuff that gets played at places like that. I think that would go great with a dance club or two.

Cool idea.

Most people are to uptight around here. We would never see something like that here. Someone tells a dirty joke in the club and somebody will run all over town saying they were offended. We are just getting draft beer for Gods sake. All this talk of clubs or pubs or comedy clubs is all great for small talk but lets get real. Until the higher ups get gone....we will never see any of this.

mug.com in Muscle Shoals already does that. Don't know how successful they really are. They cater to mainly the young christian groups.

Having just moved back to the area from San Jose,CA I can say Florence is far behind in night time entertainment. In San Jose most of the night time "hot spots" were within walking distance of San Jose State University, several night/dance clubs, Improv comedy club, eateries, ect.

Night clubs such as Toon's, The Vault and others played popular hip/hop music and had a "ladies only" section on the dance floor so they didn't have to worry about being felt up while enjoying themselves. Also all alcohol sales was from the bar (no waitresses selling on the floor) and ID's were strictly checked. Some used arm bands for those of legal age to buy and drink and allowed admission for 18 and over but alcohol only for 21 or over.

Thats interesting, although I guess I would prefer a more "secular" venue... I mean, don't get me wrong... I'm a Christian, and I have strong faith in what I believe, but I just could never get into the whole "Christian rock" music scene. Some people like it, but I find it a little...weird, and sometimes irreverent, I guess. I love religious music, but personally I much more enjoy it when it is traditional hymns, choirs, pianos, and organs, not guitars, drumsets, and tamborines. Not that there's anything wrong with those who like that stuff, but as far as religious music goes, its just not for me, I guess.
What we need to please those pesky baptist is a night club that plays nothing but Christian rock and only serves "root"beer and virgin White Russians (that would be plain milk)!

What you really need is someone with a little class to open a night club, run it the way it should be run to attract the college kids and white collar crowd and make sure everyone behaves. The problem here is most if not all night clubs and bars are operated by somewhat unsavory characters who don't police their establishments very well and are wanting to make fast money before the law shuts them down and they in turn attract a lot of negative attention.

I think you hit the nail on the head. They fall into greed and let anyone in and then sell to underage. Loui Louis was a great bar for the nice crowd when it first opened. Hated that it was in a hotel but I was surprised. They had a cigar room and a guy on a guitar or piano and it was nice. Now its club rap freaking music and you can't hear the person next to you. Someone got stabbed a bit ago outside there. There is NOWHERE for US to GO!!!
