I don't know if the problems we had tonight were due to the fact that we ate in Muscle Shoals rather than Florence (location wise that is for the Restaurant) but it was a very noticeable difference from our last visit to the same restaurant chain.

We decided to eat at Captain D's tonight and first thing we noticed is that the corporation changed their coupons to where you could only get one meal per coupon. This might have been the case all along but visits to the Florence store, before, allowed us to order several of the same meals at the coupon price. The next thing we noticed was that they no longer allow direct substitution of a bread stick for the hushpuppies.. We were told by the girls behind the counter that the breadsticks went up in price and they would no longer allow them to substitute but our last visit to the Florence store a week or so ago allowed the substitution. One more difference we noticed between Florence and Muscle Shoals was in the temp and freshness of the food. The Food at the Shoals location was warm but certainly not hot and the corn was, well, old it seemed.

I doubt we'll be back to the Muscle Shoals location any time in the near future and this trip puts in doubt whether or not the Florence Store may have made some of the same changes due to the economy.

For the money spent (we at at Red Lobster this week for lunch also) Red Lobster is by far a much better bang for the buck given the quality and taste of what we got.

I actually think restaurants are trying to give better deals in order to encourage customers to visit their establishments in difficult economic times. Look at Subway, Quiznos, and places who serve sub-style sandwiches. Same with burgers. It's kinda like taxes. If they go up, revenue goes down. I think your poll is a bit one sided and would tend to show a negative, no matter what.
I actually voted "Other" so I guess I will explain. Most of the restaurants like Captain D's are franchised. Much of the service is determined by the owner, especially if the franchising company doesn't regulate its franchisees well. Your bad experience is typical for that situation. The down side is that one bad franchisee will damage the entire group. The same is true for wholly owned outlets if their company is lax in regulation.

One of the first clues, if the system works properly, is the health rating. If you are fortunate enough to live in an area where the health inspectors do their job you will find the health rating useful. If an owner cares about a location then they will make sure it is clean and the customer is served well. The method is not always fool proof for I have seen crowds in poorly rated restaurants.

I would recommend complaining to the company. You would actually be performing a favor for the Florence location. You know the old adage, "For every one complaint there are ten unsatisfied customers who didn't complain". Captain D's is in the middle of a huge ad campaign about their quality right now. Ask them to live up to their words. If the company is worth anything they will respond.

Point taken, about the negativity and maybe I am a bit negative concerning my outlook. For the most part I haven't seen too much improvements but then I'm sure there are. Like the subs and their competition that have brought down prices that is a positive.

Back to the negative now.

Can anyone say that they actually have gotten a Sub Sandwich at any of those places that actually looked like the ones in their advertisements? I mean the advertisements look like they have lots of meat on every sandwich but after you get your order there is nothing close to the photos you see.
