The Bible also says if a man won't work he doesn't eat...Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you...and many other verses that go directly in line with my feelings on the Katrina "victims"...so please stop with the high and mighty "I'm so righteous" act...Many of us on this forum are Christians just like you and have done our part. Like I said, I've given my money to my church and I've volunteered to do the things from Alabama that I could do to help them, but at some point and time you have to let a man fend for himself and now is the time...

A proverb that I don't remember who wrote talked about take a man a fish and he will eat...teach a man to fish and he will never starve again...They are no longer "victims" and I just think it is time they started acting like it...

I just got through reading through this thread and was not going to comment...until I saw this post. Thank you, Dixie for speaking so eloquently to this "person". VERY WELL SAID! We should just all pray for her and "Mark"!
Big Grin

Friends, have a blessed evening. I also agree that it's time for the "victims" to stand up and fend for themselves.

Talking about how one helps others in need from one side of one's mouth and then ridiculing and scorning them out of the other just struck me as at least faintly hypocritical, that's all. I didn't mean to start a religious catfight/flamewar!

No problem Ed,
God has a reason for EVERYTHING. I think maybe you were a merely vehicle to a bigger purpose on this one. Smiler

Most of the Katrina evacuees were able bodied people

I have a first hand instance of an able bodied Katrina evacuee. This has been "stuck in my craw" for a while now, so thanks for bringing it up.

There has been an older guy working for my husband, my husband met him sometime at the beginning of this year & instantly felt sorry for him because of his story.....Katrina got his house, they bussed him to North Alabama, put him up in a hotel room for a while & now he has been forgotten about by everyone. When my husband met this man, he was living in his car or in the parks getting ran out everynight. So my bighearted hubby put him to work. We have a house in florence that we have gradually been doing work on to get it back to "rent out" status. So my husband told him that he could stay there RENT FREE, while he got back on his feet.....well I have learned quite a bit about this man that we all felt so sorry for. 1st of all he has quite a bit of fines to pay off up here, not sure what all for but I know some of it involves alcohol....

He puts up this pitiful tale to everybody about how pitiful he is & how the government did him wrong. Okay, I understand some of his story, but my problem with him is THEY GET PAID ON FRIDAY (& HE GETS PAID RATHER WELL) By Monday he is dead broke.....okay, remember the rent free part I mentioned earlier? Well he has ABSOLUTELY NO BILLS. His grocery bill is it & gas to work is it, for a while my husband was his shuttle!! took him everywhere! So I asked my hubby why he was having to borrow $$ by monday, well apparently he is still alittle fond of the drink, so what he doesnt pay on his fines, or eat he drinks......

Now I am starting to understand why after all this time he is still dead broke & forgotten in North Alabama........

I am trying to teach my husband that it is okay to help people, but those people HAVE GOT TO HELP THEMSELVES FIRST!

Most of the Katrina evacuees were able bodied people........but SOME of them refuse to help themselves!!

Okay, thanks for letting me rant!! I feel better now!

Thank you for letting us put a local face to the pitiful story -- I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that sees through the fog of Katrina now that the storm has passed -- three years ago...
One thing that comes to mind is something my momma told me a long time ago. "You can't help someone whose not willing to help themselves."

I'm all about helping someone, but there comes a time when enough is enough and they should be able to support themselves. Some people just don't have the "want to" they need to get themselves out of these situations. Some people want to be a burden to society (like many on here have already stated).

As far as the mess the evacuees left at the colleges and other "shelters" in Alabama, I don't think we should have to take in any more of these hetherns! Channel 48 had a story on the other night that stated they were having to call in a biohazard unit to one of the colleges because of the fecal matter that was smeared everywhere. They said it would take some time and $$$ to fix. And they have documented everything. It makes me think that they will have second thoughts about helping Louisana evacuees again, and personally I don't blame them.

"Fool me once - shame on you, fool me twice - shame on me!" I won't be fooled twice!!
Yes, TNFAN, I find it funny though that with all of the calls to the police and 911 for breakins, thefts, harassment, and physical violence -- the NWSCC cops were quick to try to smooth all of the "reports" over when the TV cameras were on...tell the truth -- because it will come out eventually anyway...if it wasn't for the other agencies -- the NWSCC would have had major issues that they couldn't handle on their hands...

The point that eveyone shoud see is that if there were 50 to a busload, not all 50 were violent and foul-mouthed. Sometimes in order to help those who need it you have to help those who don't along with it.
I see that point clearly, but it is the "select few" that ruin it for everyone...you know "one bad apple"...

If those "select few" would get off their keisters and help themselves--they could be there to help those in need as well and give back to society what they have taken and then there would less that would "need help" so we could get to the ones that need us desperately and not waste precious time and precious resources on those that are able bodied to do for themselves instead of milking a strained system...
