I needed to use a computer at the Florence Library for something a few days ago, my computer has had problems. Anyway, I go in and get logged in and I need to use some headphones. I go to the desk and ask the young lady if they had some headphones I could use. She said yes, let me get them out of the backroom for you. There was a fat guy, who seemed to be in charge at the desk, who by the way probably lives at home with his mother in her basement. He yells out to the young girl, "NO, we don't have headphones." The headphones are ours, you must bring your own.
Having said all this I would just like to say there is a better way to go about it other than what the fat man did and said. He didn't have to yell like an idiot to get his point across. I'm sitting in front of his desk, maybe ten feet away, I'm not going to steal his headphones. Maybe fat man has a title and it went to his head or something, I don't know. But he needs to learn how to act

Be careful what you post on here. That man is a dear friend of mine. He does not live at home in his mother's basement. If you have a problem with how the library is run, perhaps you could get more done if you took your complaint to a director and did so professionally rather than attacking someone personally on a chat forum. The employees there are given rules to follow.

Florence has a stellar library for a town of its size.
Theft. It is simple. People steal. People even cut out pages they don't like or are too cheap to Xerox. I had to sew in the entire Zora Neal Hurston criticism out of the MLA books four times in two years.
This is why microfilm and reference works do not circulate.
Someone went into the LC Heading HQ in Gorgas Library and put a black sharpie pen to all the "dirty words" they did not like a few years ago and someone took thousands of valuable lithographs and rare woodcuts out of old books for their own gallery at SF Public a few years ago with a razor blade.
Seeing a razor blade in the floor is an all too common thing. It makes the staff's hearts skip a beat, hoping that it was only for a blunt!

p.s. Maybe the guy is hard of hearing?
If y'all want to see a librarian get loud, just let the next time I catch someone's John Henry going for a hand ride again at the computer terminals should I resume my practice! Especially when I am trying to have a class on primary sources at my desk right in view and the students have a test on it coming up in a week!

If you want to see a bunch get loud, let a child about 3 get dropped off for hours with no adult in sight, crying because their panties are soiled and they are hungry and Mommy has been gone a long long time, then Mommy shows up and is angry because her child is wet and hungry -- angry at your staff! Who happen to be college students on work study!

Have someone come in and yell at the "pornography" inside and then preach like Bill Gray on speed. We don't get loud at that, though. Just put our glasses on the ends of our noses and ask, "Are you finished yet?" and then hand them the "Crazy Fundamentalist Who Has No Real Business in Our Library Except to Rabble Rouse and Upset Students" handout.

Headsets can be got for about $2 at Family Dollar, a short hike from FPL and Trowbridge's is on the way, as is the new bar where Mozzi's was.

I know exactly who you're talking about. That young lady at the desk is his daughter, not a library employee. The headphones she would have loaned you were her own, not the library's. And the reason she went to fetch them was the tone of your voice, which apparently frightened her.

I called the gentleman and spoke to him and his daughter. He says the library stopped loaning headphones over a year ago due to hygiene concerns, and his tone of voice was to match your own. He was mildly put off that you asked a 14-year old non-employee when he was sitting right there.

Of course, I wasn't there, and I'm not going to judge. Just thought the other side of this story should be told.

I asked the young lady at the desk because the other guy was in a conversation with someone. I thought she worked there because she was sitting behind the desk. I didn't raise my voice. I asked her if they had some headphones I could use. I was talking softly trying not to disturb others, as we were in a library. The man said he didn't like the tone of my voice is a liar. I'm always, always polite when speaking to people and I expect that much in return.

I didn't have two dollars.

In that case I would advise against making remarks about anyone who "probably lives at home with his mother in her basement".

I didn't have any money on me, snake. That's what I meant. For those of you that live with your mother in her basement I'm sorry I offended you.

Why do I doubt this in light of this post? You have what you consider to be an unsatisfactory experience with a library employee and you declare the entire Florence Library to be a joke? Why would anyone believe you? Maybe the Library at 35660 would better meet your needs? Maybe it is superior to the Florence facility?
If this gentleman is the one I asked for help one day, then I believe the whole thing was a misunderstanding. I was trying to find an article and only had part of the name and no author. This gentleman searched the library records, found it, then printed it off for me at no charge. It was only two pages. He was the most helpful person that day. Perhaps he had just been blasted for some thing on the day you went?

That is just what I was wondering. A man was seemingly rude and now he is fat and lives in his mothers basement? Dude, you have problems with being even more rude than you are accusing this man of being.

Buy yourself a computer and dont go back if you dont feel welcome, but being rude on a public forum like this is just not a good thing, especially since you pointed out his identity to all of us. Bad thing there, dude.
We had to stop loaning out headphones at my library because people would steal them. Basically giving out free headphones is not a good use of taxpayer dollars. We tried asking people to leave a library card or ID in order to use them, but you would be surprised at how many people do not carry any kind of ID.

I agree that it would be a good idea for the library to sell headsets and maybe turn a small profit.

I think that idea has been tossed around from time to time.
