GOP Sex Scandal Exposes Secretive Conservative Religious Group -- 'The Family'

Sen. John Ensign's affair has brought unwanted attention on a powerful religious network in Washington.

The following is a transcript from The Rachel Maddow Show on Washington D.C.'s "C Street House," which is now at the center of a media firestorm. Now GOP Senator Tom Coburn, sex-scandal embroiled GOP leaders Senator John Ensign and South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford have been tied to the C Street House, which is registered as a church and provides substantially lower than market rate rent. Coburn and Ensign have lived at the C Street house, while Sanford has participated in its Bible study group.

We start with a mystery -- a mystery that's unfolding alongside the two major political scandals of the summer. It's a mystery that concerns this house at 133 C Street Southeast in Washington, D.C. I'm calling it a house because that's what it looks like to me and people do live there.

But if you consult this building's financial paper trail, you will find that it's actually considered to be a church. That designation makes C Street a convenient tax-free haven for the secretive organization that runs it, an organization known as the Family. It also makes for some awkward tax and income questions for the at least five, probably seven members of Congress who live at the house, in exchange for what appears to be substantially below market rent.

As explained by our guest last night, Jeff Sharlet, who secretly infiltrated the family to write a book about them, the C Street house is a former convent. It's used as a sort of subsidized, really upscale dorm for members of Congress who are associated with this powerful, poorly understood religious group.

The Family and the house at C Street have ended up reluctantly in the headlines now because of the two major politicians' sex scandals that are embroiling the Republican Party this summer and that have taken two of their reported 2012 presidential hopefuls out of political contention.

Embattled Nevada Senator John Ensign lives at the C Street house. The husband of Senator Ensign's mistress says that prominent members of the Family -- this religious group -- including the sons of the group's founder, as well as other members of Congress who live at C Street -- were both aware of Ensign's secret affair and were involved in his efforts to pay off the mistress and her family as the affair was on again-off again ending.

Republican Senator Tom Coburn lives at C Street with Ensign. He has said he encouraged Ensign to end the affair but he has denied the allegation that he specifically encouraged Senator Ensign to pay the mistress off to the tune of millions of dollars.

Actually Blew the Dog,I can't even try to think of something to cover their butts. All I can think about is how miserable your life and your wife must be.You must not appreciate the warm feeling of a female body snuggled up to you because all your goofy ass posts about is republican sex and homosexuals.Even though you are obviously a very goofy man who is very insecure about your miniscule manhood,I'm going to give you some advice.Go to a bar, pick out a woman who looks ugly and drunk enough to sleep with you. That will get your mind off of republican sex for awhile. And rest assured,if you do find a woman dumb enough to sleep with you,you know she is an Obama voter.

I see you enjoy keeping up with my sex life and thinking that my sex life is more interesting than The GOP, once known for family values. I think you need to back off on your attacks on me and stick to the topic, you have been banned once under another name, and if you get mad enough at me again,to bring on another attack, you might just hang yourself again. I will give you all the rope you need, by not attacking you. You leave my family out of the topics.

Now, back to topic.

Yep, the once known party that stood for family values, no longer stands for family values anymore. The truth is coming out on that so called God party known as the GOP republican party for the very rich.

Maddow: That's what Jesus said?

Here's more from the same sermon.

Video transcript:

Coe: Jesus said, you have to put me before other people. And you have to put me before yourself. Hitler, that was a demand to be in the Nazi party. You have to put the Nazi party and its objectives ahead of your own life and ahead of other people.

Maddow: Again, the man speaking here is Doug Coe. He's the leader of the group the Family, that runs the secretive C Street house that features in the sex scandals of both John Ensign and Mark Sanford.

''Doug Coe describing the group's mission here in this next clip through his interpretation of the life and words of Jesus.''

Video transcript:

Coe: One of the things he said is "If any man comes to me, and does not hate his father, mother, brother, sister, his own life, he can't be a disciple." So I don't care what other qualifications you have, if you don't do that, you can't be a disciple of Christ.

Maddow: If you don't hate your father, mother, brother, sister, you can't be a disciple of Christ.

''Every American's faith is her or his own business. It's our constitutional inheritance as Americans. Now, there is no religious test for public office, there's no official religion in this country, and every American has a right to believe or not believe, to worship or not worship, or as he or she sees fit. Religion is a private matter in this country.''

Get Paid? Only a true idiot would think such. ''Alternet articles aren't exactly Pulitzer Prize material.'' Who said they were? This news was on msnbc last night as well as other newspapers. Cnn even touch up on the story. The story did not make the fox news channel or the conservative sites, because they don't like to bring out all that bad stuff on their GOP party.

Then I guess you just told me that its you, that is getting paid. Ah, the truth has a way of coming out on the foam buck. I should have known by the last name buck$$$$.

Back to topic. Do you think the GOP will ever get away from this cult called Conservative Religious Group -- 'The Family' that teaches Hitler?
I keep wondering why Blew the Dog didn't report on the sex scandal of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. His escapades with a female reporter got her fired, and his wife left him. Now he's consorting with another female reporter, but the media strangely hasn't crucified him. In fact, they're putting this former gang member's name up as the next governor of California. But wait...it must be because it's listed...

A. Villaraigosa (D)

It's that little parenthetical "D" that makes all the difference. That, and like Blew the Dog says, you have to expect democrats to act like sleazebags.

So, is this guy a Nazi or a Commie or is he making a comment about total commitment to Christ? Interesting how the left cuts and pastes to defame someone.

Wonder if he ministered to Bubba and Hildabeast after Bubba's many strayings?

Madcow or Old Yellah, both as believable as an alien sighting!

It is ok that you pick on me, because you draw the attention to my post. So please keep it up. I never lost sleep over anything thing you've said, I'm sure others feel the same. Go back to your real skin color, which is more yellow than black or white.
Old yellah,

Were you aware of the Clinton's association with this group? And, if so, why did you hide it! If not, why weren't you? As, the simplest research would have revealed the relationship.

Were you aware of the Hitler cut'n paste job? And, if so, why did you participate in such a fraud? And, if not, why weren't you aware!

If you insist on posting such tripe, you should do a bit of research, aforehand. Just cut'n pasting is for children!

No, I was not aware of the Clinton's association with this group nor was I aware that republicans were members of this group.
This is what I got from your link.

Hillary Clinton’s Spiritual Adivsor Doug Coe And His Curious Admiration For Nazis And Communist Killings. They might be more republicans and democrats coming out of the wood pile from last nights story. it will be interesting.

Statement directed to interventor directly referring to one of his posts and yet you have to make a completely idiotic comment about it. Typical. You believe yourself to be a wit; you are only half right.

The left cares nothing for the truth, just sling a bunch of cr p and hope it deflects from their progressive march towards Fascism.
As I've illustrated many times, the NSDAP was a creature of the left. As I've illustrated in this thread, Hitler was only used as an example of extreme commitment, not as a cult figure.

The left twisted the words and meaning to vilify Republicans as nazis, conviently leaving out the Democrat connection. Then, they spread the lieing filth thorough out the internet using the Big Lie principle. Guess who was the father of that technique!

The left means war, while the Republicans are deciding if a butter knife or a butter spreader are appropriate to the occasion. Its time for conservatives to lock and load, and set the switch on rock and roll! And, slip a bowie knife in your boot for a little fun!

I don't know why fox news isn't saying anything about this story. I think they think it might go away. Why would the democrats wanna live with the republicans at a republican cult church house?

Will republicans continue their treasonous assault on the morale of America?

Oh your a bully. I see. You were the kind of kid that in school I used to beat up for picking on the weaker/meeker kids. What I remember about those bullies is that usually when someone (even a girl like me) stood up to them they ran crying to the teacher.

Please try and remember that we are not in elementary school anymore and most of us on this forum would rather not have to deal with your juvenile postings and name calling. If you have a real opinion about the topic at hand then by all means post it. If you are just going to act like a child then you will be treated like one. Now go sit in the corner and think about what you have done wrong.

Ok, now about this secret religious group. I really could care less what they believe or what religion they practice. However if they are not putting their job of serving the public before their religion then they need to leave public office and join the private sector where the decisions they make do not effect the whole country. I believe when you are elected as a public official then you have to put aside certain aspects of your personal feelings and beliefs and represent the people who elected you not your own personal agenda. Dem and Repubs alike need to remember this.

Unfortunately-when was the last time the majority of elected leaders did this? And you're right it is not a one sided issue.Right now, both parties suck. But I don't think religios groups or beliefs is what is f-ing congress up;it is their incessant hunger for power.

What I posted was not a cut and paste job (and I realize that your reference to "cut'n paste" was to Nobluedog's post), but a complete and detailed article by a competent journalist, who also has authored a major book ("The Family," that goes into much more detail concerning the activities of Coe and his cult. If you want to have credibility, you will look at that article and see what kind of rebuttal you can make. You and others might try to blow it off as coming from a "liberal" source, Harpers Magagine, but the old strategem of simply begging off the debate by stereotyping sources is getting a bit old, so I advise you not to go there. Go to the article and tell us where it misses the mark.

This Coe and his cult are a menace and both the right and left ought to be wary of such arrangements as "The Family." They have a constitutional right to exist, but that does not by any means certify them as a wholesome influence in national politics.
