We lived in the San Francisco Bay area and my husband's commute to work was 24 miles one way on hwy 101 (an interstate type highway with a minimum of four lanes in each direction) his rush hour drive was 75 minutes each way, bumper to bumper. We both would rather drive in that traffic than with the crazies in north Alabama. Drivers there are much more considerate and less likely to cut you off just to keep you from getting in front of them. If you want to change lanes you just put your turn signal on and usually the next person behind you in the lane you wanted in lets you in, try that around here!
I lived in Dallas/Ft. Worth several years ago and still visit. People drive more courteous there as well. Bigger cities are not always home to good drivers though. Every time I go to Huntsville I see people running red lights and cutting others off! My worst pet peeve is people not using their turn signals. I know there was another thread on that-I may be opening up a whole new can of worms! Smiler
I'm sorry, and don't mean to argue but Huntsville isn't a big or bigger city..... Birmingham seems like a big city but doesn't have the expressways like San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco. Interstate 20/59 and I-65 go through B'ham and they built I-459 so folks could get to the mall faster but their best effort at an expressway is HWY 280 and it's a joke.

I have driven lots of miles in Ca, and I totally agree with you. If you need to change lanes out there in that bumper to bumper traffic doint 70 MPH just give your turn signal, wait a couple of minutes , and someone will back off to give you room.
The two worse places to drive I have ever been are Memphis and Nashville, with Nashville winning the "worse drivers" prize.
After years of studying the problem, I believe the mindset "you ain't gonna get in front of ME" mindset is the crux of the problem.
