A satanic group unveiled designs Monday for a 7-foot-tall statue of Satan it wants to put at the Oklahoma state Capitol, where a Ten Commandments monument was placed in 2012.

The New York-based Satanic Temple formally submitted its application to a panel that oversees the Capitol grounds, including an artist's rendering that depicts Satan as Baphomet, a goat-headed figure with horns, wings and a long beard that's often used as a symbol of the occult. In the rendering, Satan is sitting in a pentagram-adorned throne with smiling children next to him.

"The monument has been designed to reflect the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and beyond," temple spokesman Lucien Greaves said in a statement. "The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation."

The Satanic Temple maintains that the Oklahoma Legislature's decision to authorize a privately funded Ten Commandments monument at the Capitol opened the door for its statue. The Ten Commandments monument was placed on the north steps of the building in 2012, and the Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has sued to have it removed.

Similar requests for monuments have been made by a Hindu leader in Nevada, an animal rights group and the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

In response, the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission recently placed a moratorium on considering any new requests.

"Anybody can still make their request, but we'll hold off on considering them until the lawsuit is adjudicated," commission Chairman Trait Thompson said.

The push by the Satanic Temple has rankled elected leaders in this conservative state known as the buckle of the Bible Belt, who say such a proposal would never be approved by the commission.

"I think you've got to remember where you are. This is Oklahoma, the middle of the heartland," said Rep. Don Armes, R-Faxon. "I think we need to be tolerant of people who think different than us, but this is Oklahoma, and that's not going to fly here."

While Greaves acknowledges the Satanic Temple's effort is in part to highlight what it says is hypocrisy of state leaders in Oklahoma, he says the group is serious about having a monument placed there.

The group already has raised nearly half of the $20,000 it says it needs to build the monument.

"We plan on moving forward one way or another," Greaves said.

Another Oklahoma legislator, Rep. Earl Sears, called the group's effort "an insult to the good people of the state."

"I do not see Satanism as a religion, and they have no place at the state Capitol," said Sears, R-Bartlesville.

On its website, the Satanic Temple explains that it "seeks to separate Religion from Superstition by acknowledging religious belief as a metaphorical framework with which we construct a narrative context for our goals and works.

"Satan stands as the ultimate icon for the selfless revolt against tyranny, free & rational inquiry, and the responsible pursuit of happiness," the website says.

Whenever one religious group is granted the right to use public property to memorialize its deities, doctrines, or other factors of its theology, other groups must be granted the same privilege.  What will end this silliness in Oklahoma will be the deciding of the current lawsuit in favor  of the ACLU and whatever plaintiffs they represent in the case. The answer to this kind of constantly-repeated conflict is to simply prohibit all overtly religious displays on PUBLIC properties, such as the 10 Commandments, statues of Satan, enormous crosses and the like and leave it to PRIVATE persons and PRIVATE organizations to erect whatever graven images they wish to on PRIVATE property.

It is too funny, I wonder if the guy every got another art restoration job?

==============

It was a little old lady that took it upon herself to "restore" the painting. Now she's demanding payment. LOL!!

Cecilia Gimenez, the Spanish woman who “restored” the fresco on the walls of the church of Santuario de Misericordia, apparently noticed that things had “gotten out of hand,” and she didn’t have the skill required to actually do the job properly (uhh … ya think?). So she was left with no choice but to fess up to what she had done.

Professionals are now said to be assessing the damage to see whether or not the painting can be salvaged.

Vic, my Friend,

Since when has YOUR bowel movement been holy?   Careful, my Friend, your "class" -- or lack thereof, is showing.   Would you show or e-mail that piece of graphic artwork to your priest, or your pope?

Keep in mind when you post such graphics -- that is the impression, or image, of the Roman Catholic you are putting on display for all to see.   Just a thought!

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

These people are seriously screwed up in the head, but I say let them put it there.  I hope they have good insurance for it, because my guess is that it will last about a day before it suffers a serious accident. Oklahoma City is a great place with a good Christian atmosphere and lots of Bible believing Christians who would not take kindly to the image of the Great Deceiver being idolized in their far city.

Actually, if one actually reads the Bible they will find out that Satan looks nothing like this picture created by his so called "worshippers".  Satan was one of God's angels, a seraphim, who name, Lucifer translates to "light bearer".  he was supposedly a bright and talented individual, probably a musician. His problem was vanity and jealousy, and much like those who worship him today, Lucifer thought he koew everything and was more than capable to be in charge, so he led a revolt in heavan and it got him kicked out, where he roams the Earth like lion seeking whom he may devour. This image of Lucifer is a silly image promoted by Lucifer himself.  It makes it easy to make fun or and dismiss something so juvenile and cartoonish. There is no doubt Satan exists, any Christian who believes in God must also believe there is an evil one as well, so to me this act by a bunch of people who do not even know whom they are worshipping is pretty comedic and will do more to hurt their cause than to help it.

Well, not being a believer in either a god or satan, it doesn't really matter to me how he's depicted. However, I don't think it was the satanists that pictured him as a boogeyman first. That would be the christians. The same with angels, they are supposed to be a fearsome bunch, male only, but after artists depicted them as beautiful and most times women, that has been everyone's description that claims to have seen them. Listen to christians who claim they've "seen" satan, oh my goodness, he's a horrible monster!!

Like many others, you must have gotten the majority of your information on "Lucifer" from Dante's Inferno or Paradise Lost, since it evidently did not come from the Bible. The name "Lucifer" appears only once in scripture (Isaiah 14:12) and there it refers not to Satan, but to the King of Babylon.  Here is a straightforward and scholarly discussion of the matter:

The History Channel’s representation of The Devil is causing controversy.

Many viewers of ‘The Bible’ have taken to social networks to point out similarities between the 10-part miniseries’ Prince of Darkness and Pres. Obama.

Yes, could be where they got the model for the gremlins. They turned nasty if they were fed after midnight, and multiplied if they got wet. They accidentally spilled water on gizmo, he multiplied, and then someone, the friend of the kid that owned gizmo I think, took one as a pet and fed him after midnight.
