We got our kids an Xbox 360 and guitar hero for Christmas. I'm the only musician in the family and I'm the only one who has trouble with it! LOL. You actually strum before the note which throws me.

I studied under a concert pianist for 25 years, played keyboard in a top 40 cover band, played Cello with the Shoals Symphony, and taught music for years but my non musical family stomps me at guitar hero.

Any other "real" musicians have trouble with it? Any tricks?

Well George, welcome to the world of XBox 360. I got my kids one last Christmas. XBox is to Microsoft what the Happy Meal is for McDonald's. I bought myself a 52 inch television and a surround sound system last year. The XBox 360 is hooked to it. So now I get to watch Gears of War or Call to Duty most of the time. But I love my children so I don't really say much.

The boys played Gears of War 1 for a whole year. Now they have Gears of War 2. They say Gears of War 2 is better. The neighborhood kids come over with extra monitors / TVs and their XBoxes. They all hook into my network and have Gears of War parties at my house. Of course they include other people on the Internet. The boys form their own "war party." So I guess I would say yes. They love it. I can't figure out the XBox controller. I guess I am finally growing old, at least in their minds.

Dang, with school out for the rest of the week, I'm going to send my 2 sons over there!!!
I have a friend who plays guitar, and he hates Guitar Hero and is bad at it, he won't even try anymore and his excuse is that he believes it will hurt his guitar playing skills. A girlfriend of mine plays the mandolin, and she can beat anybody at Guitar Hero. She plays it on expert difficulty with ease. My husband plays piano, keyboards and guitar, and he's pretty good at it. It seems more of a hand/eye coordination thing to me.

my kids are experts at it...I wouldn't even try
I saw (well, heard) an ad for this game just before Christmas as I walked past a TV somewhere and didn't realize it was for Guitar Hero. I just remember thinking how very odd it was to hear AC/DC playing “Let There Be Rock” at full volume in the middle of a Costco. It is after all 30 years old. It was odd, but cool nonetheless. I turned around and saw the ad it was then that I realized that I am officially OLD.

I don't own a game system, but it seems like it would be more fun to learn to play a real Gibson SG and to start a real band (and maybe even have tons of real groupies Wink). I mean, I know it's just a game, but do you all see a trend here? Instead of strapping on the pads and playing football, are more kids just buying the game? Instead of Little League Baseball is it easier to just stay inside and plug in? It just seems like doing the real thing would be way more fun.
My oldest and I got out the guitar hero last night. She's already gotten quite good at it. On the new version, you can create your rocker, down to the clothes, hairstyles, tattoos, etc. You can connect with other people playing online - which we haven't tried yet. Last night, Ted Nugent came on stage and played a guitar duel with my oldest. Hahaha!!! If you don't play well, you get booed off stage.

I love the selection of music. It's a great mix and is getting kids into 70s and 80s rock.

Add in 3 other people and you have a band. I have the two guitars, drums, and mic. It is pretty fun when you get everybody rockin.

lol! bunch of grown ADULTS swapping gaming secrets. Big Grin
O.K. here is my secret. lay the guitar in your lap. (as in Jeff Healey) LOL. it is much easier if you forget that is a guitar and treat it like a game controller. hehehe. Wink next trick is practice when you are alone. make the mistakes and laugh at yourself.(this will help you cope when everyone else is laughing at you beating the drums like a spider monkey on crack! ). and lastly and the most important fact. ALL GAMES ARE MORE FUN IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE GAME AND PLAY WITH A GROUP OF FRIENDS. rock band is my favorite because of the "everyone plays the part" aspect of the game. (it is hard to make fun of me when you are singing like a strangled moose.) all in all i love this style of gaming. and any of you exercise nuts. i challenge you to try the "Wii Fit" it can put any aerobics teacher to shame. LOL. i mean work you til you cant go any longer.
My son just came by and picked up his Guitar Hero games and took them back to his place..guess I won't be trying it.

I taught myself to play guitar a few years ago. I am not a musical person and it was difficult for me. I rented videos and played along with them until I got it.

My dad taught my kids to play guitar and mandoline in less than a week...and they were playing on stage with a BAND three days later!!

I think the musical talent skipped a generation. Frowner LOL
