Well, here we go again. Flotown wanting to take down an overpass and put up more stoplights.

They should just officially change the name of the city to "Stoplight City"

Well , thanks for the correction, but I still have to wonder why , if it is DOT, they can put overpasses and exit ramps in other places, and poor ole Flotown can't seem to get two streets to intersect without a stoplight, even when there is an overpass, like Veterans and the Stoplight Bridge road.

Same for the south side, where there is an overpass , but still a stoplight on Wilson Dam rd and Reservation Road/River Road.

Does DOT not have ANYBODY working in their engineering department that has ever been to somplace other than here that has on and off ramps, and access roads and such as that so as to avoid so many damm stoplights.

I believe there are now 7 stop lights between Wilson Dam rd and Woodward. Strange, but back before they widened the street, there were only 2.

Makes me wonder if the main reason that MS wants to get Wilson Dam rd widened is so they can find more places to put stoplights.

Wonder if they can fix it so the road won't flood anymore?

Stoplights are the price we must pay for living in an increasingly urban area. They are also a cheaper alternative to building on/off ramps, frontage roads, overpasses and underpasses. They slow traffic so these widened roads don't won't allow freeway speeds. They allow traffic entering from side streets a safer way to enter the main thorough fare. I'm not a fan of stoplights, who is, but they serve a pupose as more and more vehicles use the streets.

In most cases I agree , but I would argue that specifically those on either side of "Stoplight Bridge" are a waste. A new road with plenty of right of way to put on and off ramps, and overpasses were in fact built, but in the end, they just had to put in those damm stoplights on a divided 6 lane road.

I have never seen such a poor design for a new highway in my entire life (and I have seen some doozies) .

It was in the paper a while back that someone running for mayor of Tuscumbia wanted to put in stop lights out on 72 so people driving thru would possibly want to visit beautiful downtown Tuscumbia if they had to stop. More regressive thinking .

The more traffic has to stop in this area, the less likely it is that some manufacturer will want to build here. One of the reasons Toyota gave for locating in Tupelo was the highway infrastructure there., You can go thru Tupelo on 45 North or South without ever having to stop, and you can go thru East or West on 78 (soon to be I22) without every hving to stop. Someone used their brains there, somebody here has a brother in law that sells stoplights.

I think it might have more to do with the local business community. They seem to think that anything to slow traffic down so you have to look at their business is great. One local town fairly recently turned down an ALDOT proposal to improve the median of a four lane highway. As part of the proposal ALDOT would have eliminated the dangerous median crossing lanes. The howl went up from the local business owners that it might make it harder to get to their business in spite of existing frontage roads and controlled intesections. Once again showing business trumps public safety
