I was born and raised in Florence, Al., we lived in Muscle Shoals for about a year.
Moved to Fl. with 1st hubby in 1983, left him and returned to Florence in 1986. In 1989, I relocated to Fl. where I married my current husband. We lived in Fl. until 2007, after the hurricanes came through rent, utilities, car insurance, food etc. skyrocketed, we moved back to Al. because we could not make it in Fl. any longer. I love the Shoals area's hospitality, slower pace of life and economy. I miss the school systems in Fl. and my friends.

Of course, this is actually none of anyone's business but your own, but I was curious... I see so many web-sites posted about the State that has nothing to do with us here, and it dawned on me that maybe a lot on here aren't from around here???

If you don't mind... Are you from this area? I am,.. .. and other than a few years away for dependant Military living, I have always been here...

How about you? What area do you live in? What State? What is it like where you live as far as the topics we discuss here, such as religious beliefs, and things of that nature?

This is not a poll, of sorts, it is just a basic curiosity so that I know when I am talking to someone I KNOW if they understand what I mean when talking this area, or this area's politcs and such....

Okay.... who is next? I had my turn, LOL!!!

I was born in Niagara Falls, New York. I could hit a Canadian in the head with a quarter across the gorge from the hospital.

I've lived in West Virginia a couple times and right down here in Florence back in the early to mid seventies.

I just spent the past 33 years living in Connecticut and have now moved back down to Florence as of August of '09.

People where I'm from don't talk much atall about religion. There's so many different ones (Jehovah's Witnesses/Pentecostals/Catholics/Methodists/Baptists/Episcopalians/Presbyterians/Jews-LOTSA Jews/Lutherans/Yahwehs/Moonies/Bright Clouds/Mormons/etc., etc.)

No CoCs though.

Other than nobody caring what your religion is or even if you have one or not, the places I used to live are pretty much like this one-except the economy and job market was better.
Born in East Tennessee and have lived in Indiana, Ohio, and Georgia as well as here in Florence. Other than Chattanooga we have lived here the longest and chose here to make our final retirement destination. As for the other places we lived Fort Wayne, Indiana was a great place. Not only was the traffic engineering the best of any city I have either lived in or visited but their education system was also very good.

As for why we chose the Shoals as our pick to retire to there were many reasons. Ease of getting around, great eating, the crime stats, the river and great fishing. The people are very friendly and the weather is a very good mix. Over all the Shoals has a lot going for it and it's too bad that the area can't seem to find more industry and business to relocate to the area to provide more jobs. I, and the wife, love the area.
I was born at ECM in Florence Alabama.Raised in Lexington Al. Oh how I miss it there.I didn't go to far just right up to Greenhill lol I did give Iron City Tn. a try but storms hit there so bad when I stayed in 1994 it wiped everything out so I left . I do however still live in Greenhill and I would never want to give this place up.When we take the kids to the zoo and up to see the amish I am always ready to come back home. I love it here .. This is a great place
Would love to hear what it is like to live in New Foundland, Tiwan, even some of the US cities..Travel is the best eucation and hearing from folks who live(d) there next.
Southern P.. will just keep "yall" in purgatory in my prayers. Kindred, I've raced on the Fontana Dam a few times...quite beautiful in your neck of the woods!
We all agree the Shoals is a great place to live, but I want to be selfish and not see it outgrow some of the things that are so nice about it..

"some dont like me, but I am one I would be proud to know"

From the Book Rev. Soldiers in Alabama:

GRESHAM, THOMAS, (1761-1816) served as private in Capt. Robert Powell's company, Col. Thomas Marshall's 3rd Virginia regiment. He was born in Amherst County. Va.; died in Lauderdale County, Alabama.—D.A.R. Lineage Book; Vol. 117, page 272.

I couldn't find him listed in Gresham Cemetery. I wonder if it is unmarked?

My 4th great grandfather Robert Finney - from the book South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution: “b. 1753. He enlisted in the Sixth Regiment (South Carolina Continental Line) about 1 February or 17 March 1776. On 4 June 1776, he became a corporal. He served under Capt. Samuel Taylor and Col. Sumter. Moved to Alabama. National Archives, M853, Roll 16.”

Robert died in Lawrence County after 1830. His Revolutionary War marker is in Old Town Creek Baptist Church Cemetery located at the intersection of Alabama 101 and (old) 24 in Lawrence County between Landersville and Mt. Hope.

He is not listed in Owen’s book Revolutionary Soldiers in Alabama cited by Phoenix Rising.

Neither is Benjamin Carpenter, another 4th great grand and a RevWar soldier from Va buried in Masterson Cemetery in the Wolf Springs community of west Lawrence County.

Nor is William Hodges 1754-1843, who, according to SC Patriots, was a private in the SC militia and moved to Alabama and whose RevWar marker is also located in Masterson Cemetery.

If your family predates statehood when where we live now was Mississippi Territory, there’s a good chance you descend from Revolutionary War soldiers, however, you will not find any RevWar land grants for service for this area as none were given. And the French and Indian Wars predated the RevWar which means the whatever grants would have been British, not American, and therefore voided. This was Injun Country. Most likely your RevWar ancestors were from Virginia and the Carolinas migrated to this area from eastern Tennessee after the War of 1812 and unless 1812 War vets acting on war service grants, they most likely they purchased land from the Huntsville Land office. I have mine for the farm deeded to my 3rd great grandfather and signed by Andrew Jackson. A good, but not perfect, source for finding land your folks may have owned can be found in the book Old Huntsville Land Office Records & Military Warrants 1810-1854. It seems my family may have “squatted” on their land some 15 years before purchasing. Try before you buy, I guess.

I know my SC (and VA families) were in Lawrence County at least by 1815, so when I “migrated” from SC almost two centuries later, I was not the first member of my family to do so. And the longer I live here, the more I appreciate that they did. What a grand legacy they left me.
I was born in Iuka and we moved to Tuscumbia in 1940. My Dad worked for the Southern Railway. We lived in the same house in Tuscumbia until 1950 when we moved to Highland Park. I was "forced" to go to Sheffield High School because of the move. I left here in 1955 to go up north and get rich. I intended to stay 2 years and make enough money to come home and buy everything i wanted in Colbert County. I ended up spending 45 years in Zion, Il. I had a sucessful auto parts business. "Jim's World of Speed in Half-Day, Ill. Even though i lived up north for all those years; my heart was always in Tuscumbia. I even wrote a book about after we retired and moved back. I think this is the best place to live. We did not get any of the so-called incentive money to move back; only our desire to come home. We now live on 7 acres of rocks and snakes in Barton but it is close enough to Tuscumbia to satisfy me. It is sad for me to go downtown and see so many empty stores but i realize time marches on and things have changed. North Alabama is home and always will be. Read "Walk Through Town" to see how Tuscumbia looked in 1946. Not advertising; just want to add to your original question!

Pooh's dad,
You know if there was a old airport where the current golf course is in Tuscumbia. I had a old aviation map and it showed a airport there.
i was born and raised here. have traveled from one coast to the other and everywhere in between.
i like it here but do see myself moving away one day. (further south)
what i do like about this area...lots of places to eat and shop, the rivers and creeks and the great outdoors.
what i don't like about this area...i'd better keep my mouth shut. i don't want to offend anyone ;~)
