Because he claims to be, yet all he does is post links to the same websites. I believe he is simply here to increase traffic to those sites, not discuss. That's why he has so many posts in such a short amount of time, almost all contain links to the same sites that contain advertising.

Edkit isn't local and I don't agree with hardly anything he says, but that doesn't bother me. What does bother me is seeing the forum spammed with ads from pba.

These people who live here don't know how lucky they are. Little children up there back then had to belong to a gang if they were going to survive. And it was not these so called make up gangs that some think we have here

That is exactly why I moved here after I had children.I have no doubt in my mind that I would have lost one,if not more of them,to gang violence. You are 100% right about the little pretend gangs here.

Also lived in MS, TN and am now stuck in purgatory in NJ. The one good thing about NJ is realizing how much beeter off folks are in AL. The average homeowner pays about $3000 dollars in property taxes alone each year (some as much as 20k). The cost of living here is obscene!! My wife and I gross about 85k and are struggling to get by. A one bedroom apartment (about 700sqft) cost $1000 a month. Can't wait to get back to the South were your money goes much farther.

well, hurry back here,I will buy you a cup of coffee so we can agree and disagree. lol

I DRINK COFFEE TOO!!!, LOL!!! In fact, it is my 'drink' of choice!!! lol

Rides? I know of one, what rides are you talking about?

Interesting, no answer to the question.

Spring Park has built up a lot... loads of fun for the kidlets, and a few RIDES too!!!
Its a relative thing, actually. I've lived here all my life so far, except for a year or two that was job related. I'm 46 years old. I have a friend that blows my mind. His mom and dad moved back to Florence in 1969. He was born in 1970 in Florence. If you ask him where he's from he says Detroit. I don't get it. He's never lived a day there but that's his home. Go figure.

I would take you up on that. I love to have good discussions. There is nothing wrong with two parties disagreeing, as long as they can continue to be civil. Both have to be willing to have an open mind too.

I can't imagine someone so ashamed of this area to say they are from detroit?
When MT went to Detroit for their bowl game, some of the fans on the message boards were far from impressed with the city. Why anyone would claim to be from Detroit when they're not is beyond me. I still tell people that Florence is my hometown, even though I doubt I'll ever live there again, it's still where I'm from and I have no shame in saying so.

I'm back in Bama now, living on the verge of Madison. I miss the entertainment, culture, education, and employment opportunities in Georgia but I do not miss the cost of the living and the long drive to see my mama.

Where at in Jersey? I'm stuck up here now, myself.
Although, you know where I've lived.. I'll answer anyways, mom. Big Grin

I was born in Florence. I have lived in at least brief periods of time in Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Saint Jo. Tn, Five Points, Tn, and Providence, KY. I wasn't even thought of when mom lived the awesome places like, CA, FL and Newfoundland, though.. xD

I've been to many states/places through the years, but Muscle Shoals is where I call home. Big Grin

My folks settled in northwest Alabama before statehood, but I was born in the lowcountry of SC. I lived there until I retired in 2001 with intentions of moving to Alabama and live on family land. However, within an hour after the second plane hit the tower, I was called to active duty and plans were put on hold for two years. Since retiring from my “second” job, finally “my home’s in Alabama.”

Phoenix City!!! Been there many many times!!! Got loads of family in that area and in Opelika... go down that way at least 6 times a year!!!

I thought you were in Phoenix Arizona! See how mistaken we can get on just the typewritten words? lol

Hope everything is going well down there since all the bad storms!!!
Thats right, only they spell it Phenix City for some odd reason.

We did have storms but almost all the damage was across the river in Columbus. I did visit one of the neighborhoods that sustained damage and saw was a span of about 6 or 8 houses on top of a hill that were destroyed. They were nice 2 story brick houses in one of the better parts of town. The top floor of one house was resting in pieces across the street in their neighbor's front yard. The miracle was there were no deaths which might not surprise you but if you saw the pictures you would be shocked that no one was killed. One house completely imploded. There is a frame and walls but no insides.

Many miles, but a small world... I have a lot of relatives in that area, and friends scattered from Montgomery to Columbus. That part of Alabama is one great place, but unlike you, I only get to VISIT ...and you live there, so that may be the differences in thinking.

I have a cousin down there now, who has been sent home from Bethany House (I think that is the name of it)... and she doesn't have much longer.. Frowner ... She is only 56 years old, and IF Ann Margaret ever had a twin, it would be her!!! ,... everyone who has ever known her has said that!!! Beautiful woman she is, inside and out...

Sorry, got off on a tangent... just my mind wonders when I think of that part of Alabama and Georgia... and sometimes even unpleasant things come to mind.

Maybe someday you can come back here, ... I love it here Big Grin ... But have lived so many different places, and when I FINALLY dropped roots here, I refuse to drag them up again... getting too old for that!! lol

My Dad and Mom were part of the "dam bunch" before the war traveling with the jobs as TVA built along the river. War got DAD to guard Germans and Itallians in middle Ala., Mom went to build B24's in Michigan. They came back here after the war and I came along. Was raised in this general area - left for a while, but have come home. My Dad's family has been in North Al since the revolutionary war.

You might want to double check that. There were no white settlers in Alabama until about 1800-01.

I can show you the grave of one of my forfathers who was a revolutionary soldier with the plack from the United States Government sitting on it. It is most assuridely in North Alabama where he was given land for his service to the country during the war. Moved here from Va.

The local cemetary where some of my family are buried is named for Thomas Grisham, a revolutionary war solder. I think his grave is dated aroud 1799. His brother is also there, both have dauthers of the revolutionary war memorial placs there. I havent found why they was here but exelman has a good posible reason.

"some dont like me, but I am one I would be proud to know"

Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville is suppose to be the oldest cemetery in the state. It was founded in 1818. John Hunt the founder of Huntsville did not move here until 1803-04.

I have some land deeds too from the French-Indian Wars and the War of 1812.

I will look into this. I've looked at local cemeterys and this is the oldest I've found. I'm not absolute about the dates right now.

"some dont like me, but I am one I would be proud to know"

From the Book Rev. Soldiers in Alabama:

GRESHAM, THOMAS, (1761-1816) served as private in Capt. Robert Powell's company, Col. Thomas Marshall's 3rd Virginia regiment. He was born in Amherst County. Va.; died in Lauderdale County, Alabama.—D.A.R. Lineage Book; Vol. 117, page 272.

I couldn't find him listed in Gresham Cemetery. I wonder if it is unmarked?
Not too sure why this seemed to hit a nerve, but the relative I was refurring to was born in 1748 in New Jersey. Served in the revolutionary war at Yorktown. Moved to North Ala. around 1810. (yes I know the Revolutionary war ended in 1783- I admit I took a little liberty, but didn't have my "papers" at the time).
He died in Feb 1839 in North Ala and is buried here. The origional headstone was vandalized some years ago.
Periodically there is "decoration " at the grave and maintenance of the cemetary. If you are interested in helping, PM me and I'll hook you up.
