I'm curious (my trip home to the Shoals over the weekend)

I was in the Shoals over the weekend visiting with family and decided to drive around my hometown and other places.

The usual, depressing part of my trip was seeing Russellville. I grew up in that area and am saddened every time I see it now. With the exception of the new sidewalks they are putting in, the place has fallen into disrepair. I can remember it looking like your average small town when I was a kid. I remember parades with balloons and cotton candy. It just isn't the same. And, look, I know there's a large population of Mexicans living there now; that fact can't be ignored. Though I can understand them coming here for better opportunities, we can't keep importing another country's poverty...but that's a subject for another thread. It's just not the same town I grew up in.

On Sunday, I decided to drive around for a while before the fireworks were scheduled to start. I ended up at the Florence Industrial Park - just to see if I recognized any of the businesses that are out there now and discovered there's hardly anything out there anymore at all.

So I am curious: Where does everyone work now? Do most of you drive to Huntsville or something? There are some really nice, expensive homes in the Shoals, too, and I'm wondering how people are buying them. They can't all be doctors and lawyers. Have any of your family members or friends moved away for better job opportunities? Again, just curious.

The place just looks like a ghost town. I do sometimes miss living there but it looks so vacant now...and I know there are no jobs.

I wouldn't call the area a ghost town. Russellville is probably one on the decline.

The Shoals is definitely more diversified than many areas of similar size. There is no one place that everyone, or at least one family member, works but you do still have TVA, Wise, the hospitals, schools, some newer industries in Barton and Muscle Shoals, and many smaller employers that service some of these larger ones.

I actually know of no one that is actively looking for work that can't find it, but I'm sure there are some. There are a good number of people that work in Huntsville or Decatur but still choose to live in the Shoals, and I think that says a lot for our area as to a great place to live, raise children, or even retire.

The Shoals has done ok during the Great Recession and in my opinion is poised for an above average rebound with the low cost of living and the educational and training opportunities offered by our local colleges.

Why do you think there are no jobs? You came for a weekend and found out from that visit there are no jobs??
I don't know anybody that is looking for a job but I know plenty of people that has a job.
I hate it when people come from out of town and start looking down there nose at us.

Yes, I visited over the weekend. I do that sometimes because I grew up there. And because I grew up there and still have family there, the Shoals is not exactly a foreign land to me. Roll Eyes

Nowhere in my initial post did I give the impression I was looking down my nose at the Shoals. I was just curious where everyone works now (thought I expressed that pretty clearly) because the industrial park looks dead and I didn't see many new businesses.

My initial post was an honest observation about the area. I'm sorry you couldn't pick up on that.

So where are all the good paying jobs in the area, Javier?

Buttercup, I wonder that myself and I live here.
TVA is still here, but when I started work with them, they employeed about 35000. When I retired, there were only 12,000, and I understand there are a lot less now,and that's valley wide, so I would venture to say TVA is not a major employer in the area.Ford, and Reynolds gone, Wise here but I don't know how big they are, and Robbins is probably a fairly large place.
Yet, there are houses going up every day that I would guess are in the 200K+ and for sure, I don't know where that much of that kind of money is coming from.

I grew up in Russellville too, my old teen stomping grounds. People still ride the strip on week-ends but it's 85% Mexicans. There's been new business's & churches come in but it's Mexicans.
The town is definitely not what it used to be (thanks to the Mexicans) but I wouldn't call it a ghost town.
As for the tri-cities, there is business's in the Industrial Park so I don't know how you missed them. There's also TVA & Wise.
I've wondered the same thing about the new homes going up on 6th St.
I don't think the tri-cites looks like a ghost town either but maybe it's because we like it & consider it home. Cool

Well, then many businesses in the industrial park don't see a need to put up a sign indicating what's there. All I saw were a lot of buildings. Then again, it was a holiday and no one was working anyway, I assume.

I'll always have a certain affection for the area too. I know it's a good place to raise kids and feel safe and all that but it's sad that so many people have to move away to find a job.

I wouldn't mind living in the Huntsville area and have it on the radar once the economy improves.

Buttercup, don't expect the majority here to admit there's a problem. Ever. If their gumment tells them everything's okay, then it's OKAY, dadburnit. A good many here are retired, a good many on assistance, and I doubt, with all the extended unemployment benefits, too many are looking for a job. And if they are, yes, they'll either have to commute or accept minimum wage. That is, unless they know somebody.

I believe that the chicked factory jobs(i.e. Russelville) had a hard time filling their workforce. These dirty/meanial jobs were too low for people around here or where ever.

My cousin, a upper manager of 2 local plants told me this.

Expensive homes are not the only luxury item I can understand that's owned.
I wonder how all the younger kids drive new super 4 wheel drive trucks, Beamers, and/or top-o the line cars? I figure they must be financed by their daddy's retirement cause you sure can't afford them with a minimum wage job. At least I couldn't 30 years ago.

My husband and I have a small business (distributorship) that would allow us to live anywhere in AL, MS or TN. We choose to live in Florence because we love it here.

The Shoals area is beautiful, culturally rich and one of the safest in the country. We have plenty to do for fun/leisure, but are within driving distance to larger cities if we need/want something extra.

I have no desire to live in a large city that quite literally stinks, fight horrid traffic conditions and pay a fortune to live in a tiny space. I sincerely hope I am never forced to for financial reasons. JMHO

I mean something that's not sports or church related and that's cheap/free. How many times can you go to the river, Ivy Green, the Indian Mound, etc.? Unless you have family here, I see nothing that would make someone ever want to move here except maybe the mild winters and lower cost of housing. That's fine, but what the heck do you do when you GET here?

We do the same things that people in cities all over the country do for fun.

I swim, ski, skate, bowl, play ball, see a movie, go see a play, go see a band live, host a party or go to a party, read a great book, write, play card games or boardgames, watch TV, LOTRO or WOW or the like, photography, do something goofy to laugh at other people's reaction who laugh with you when they see it's in jest, shop, picnic in the park, sunbathe, golf, arts & crafts projects (not for me, blech, but perhaps for you), facebook (it's the devil - run away - lol), look up things of interest via computer or library, go swing on a swingset at the park - you never outgrow this! - it's fun!, manicure/pedicure, put new songs on your ipod or computer, watch animals in their natural habitat, sing at the top of my lungs, turn up the music & dance!...

I could keep going, but I'll stop. Honey, if you want to have fun, there is ALWAYS fun to be had. HA!

I would go to the river every day if my work schedule allowed it. Well, except days like today when it is oppressively hot.

I'm with Joy, if you can't find something to do here, then you must be looking at it all wrong.

What do you do anywhere? Eat, watch TV, read, go to a movie or a play, go out with friends, work, walk along the river (stream, creek, ocean), walk though the woods, have a picnic, watch your kids play ball, go to a revival, go shopping, clean the house, cut the grass, feed the dog, etc.

What do you WANT to do?

with no offense meant to Joy, or any of you , I think the question was what is there for YOUNG people to do ? I saw that question as pertaining to those under 21.

When I was in HS, I played in a band around the area. When we were not otherwise engaged, we would play at the youth center, or in the basement of one of the local restaurants , charge kids a quarter each to get in , and have a dance. I remember once a high school girl from Memphis commented to me on how much there was to do here (small town in the area) !. Nothing for them to do in Memphis !
I've thought about that statement a lot down through the years, and that does beg a question as to what is it for people under 21 to do ? Yea, they can go to the river, and if they are lucky enough for their folks to trust them in a boat even out on the river, but what is there for teens to do ? I got 2 pre-teen granddaughters, and I hope there is somewhere they will be able to go somewhere, and do things that will keep them out of trouble. I just don't know what that is.

After you stop giggling at the reaction, tell people that walk by that you are doing a survey & ask their reaction. Then you could come back here and tell us the results.

People under 21 are usually hanging out with friends at the mall till it closes. Or they are riding the strip.
Why do we always worry about entertaining our kids? Is it the techno environment that they have to have 24/7 stimulation? How many have video lan parties? Gone are the days of sitting back and being happy to just be alive. Corny, yes, but I'm old so it's allowed!

No, you don't sit on it until you get to where you are going. That would be even funnier, but no, please don't get arrested trying out my idea! HA!

Now, riding in the back of a truck while mudriding through hilly countryside after a rainstorm is not illegal, but in hindsight, I'm lucky to be alive...lol.

Either way, you should start at the first thing on my list and don't stop until you are smiling, ridden of all that meanness. Folks like WH just like to stir the pot. It's best just to laugh at them and move on or else ignore them all together.

Some people are geared for a little faster paced life and they will not be happy here, no matter their age.

The majority of folks out grow the "there's nothing to do here" mentality of youth and realize there are very few places in this country that are a better place to live and raise a family.

Many folks I have worked with have moved here from other areas and all have fallen in love with this area and do not wish to leave.

Let me be clear: I'm not putting down the Shoals! I grew up there. I know it's a great place to raise a family, etc. I'm just curious about where everyone works, considering the number of $200K+ homes in the area and teenagers in brand new cars I saw last weekend.

Having lived in sheffield my whole life I have found ways to entertain myself. here are just a few.

1. stand at the front door and scream here spot here
2. see how many time I can flush the commode in 10 minutes.
3. see how far I can run before the screen door slams shut.
4. watch the neighbors move out.
5. go job hunting
6. count the empty buildings downtown
7. go out in public wearing one red sock and one green sock, then tell people I have another pair just like them.
8. Go to the back door and scream here spot here (thats my favorite)
and people think theres nothing to do here. pffft..........

Sounds exciting!

If only that hotel was still there (the Grant I think?), you'd have 9 through at least 12 ways to be entertained. (According to rumors I heard about the place when I was a bit younger.)

Really? If the rumors are true why hasn't someone started a thread just about "The Hotel Grant" at some point? I want stories!

All I remember is being at a sleepover with my girlfriends in about 7th grade, calling up The Hotel Grant and asking if they were hiring, then giggling like the girls we were and hanging up.

As for the local outlook on jobs I am not 100% certain but it seems a bit grim over the past year and a half or so. I know that when we have put in help wanted ads that for the past several years might have brought in 8 or 10 applicants to choose from (if we were lucky) are now bringing in 500+ applicants so I take that as a bad sign but I do hear that problem is not unique to our area.
As for things to do here, for young people there are a lot of Church sponsored events where the Bible will not be shoved down your throat while you're there. There are also a few bars and even some clubs that do not serve alcohol. Then there are the obvious things for young and old alike. Our area has a lively music scene if you know where to look. There is not a day that goes by that there are not at least a couple local places to go for decent live music. Our greatest asset for things to do is the river, swimming, fishing, skiing, sailing, etc. If you like water sports, this is the place! For the golf fanatics we have more golf courses than cotton fields, take your pick. Then we have other sports, plenty of places to shoot basketball, play tennis, racquet ball, baseball, etc. Plenty of places for camping, muddin, hiking, or hunting. We can always go to the movies, usually I choose the drive-in at Russellville instead of going to the theater at the mall. Fairly often you can catch a play at UNA or the Ritz.
For an area our size we have some decent shopping and places to eat (not just chains either, a lot of local favorites here). We have parks, playgrounds, the waterslide, putt-putt- golf, bowling, skating, indoor places for kids to play on inflatable’s, batting cages, and of course Chuck-E-Cheese (a place I despise going but the kids love it). We have a few small museums and galleries. This by all means not an exhaustive list of things to do in the Shoals but there is a little something for almost everyone at just about any given time.
One of my favorite things about living in the area is the small town atmosphere but having plenty to do at the same time. If at any point there is something I want to do in Huntsville or Tupelo both are only about 60 miles away which is an easy trip for an afternoon or evening outing. Another good thing is that we are more or less centrally located between Nashville, Birmingham, and Memphis (& Tunica) all easy places for a day trip or overnight. If I just want to get away for the weekend I can always look for weekend getaway specials on Travelocity, the Huntsville airport is less than a one hour drive. Then of course there is Joe Wheeler park and the State Park (TN) at Pickwick which s only a stone’s throw from here.
Definitely not a boring place to live, maybe everything is not in walking distance or a cab ride away but at the same time we are not far from anything.

Basically, no town or home is perfectly suited to fulfill all you might want or need. I've many times wished I could have one home city center somewhere where the streets are lined with shopping, restaurants, coffee shops, entertainment, etc. while having one home way out in the country where the nearest neighbor is miles away. Not being fabulously wealthy, the closest I've found so far to being an all around great place to live is Florence.

I imagine jobs are scarce everywhere. It's tough to make ends meet right now for my family as well. We don't even have expensive taste...just want to be able to pay the bills. However, since there are folks with much bigger problems, I'll be thankful for what I do have. Plus, it always gets better eventually. Smiler

500+ applicants is bad. I really don't see it getting better any time soon, but one can hope.

On a lighter note, I love the King Drive-In in Russellville and am so glad they've been able to keep it going. I grew up watching movies there. It's just such a treat - and a truly American experience - to go to the King Drive-In.

When we're in town in the spring or summer, we'll go from time to time. My son loves it! He thinks it's so cool to sit in the back of the truck and watch a movie outside.

The last time I was there and was in the concession stand, I made sure to tell the owner how much I appreciated that they hadn't changed hardly anything about the drive-in since I was a kid. It has aged, but it hasn't changed - even the counter and the benches outside are exactly how they were years ago. She told me that customers tell her that all the time, and that they plan to keep it going as long as they're able to operate the place.

And speaking of the concession stand...I also noticed several cars and trucks parked behind the concession stand (there was plenty of parking) where the concession stand was an obvious obstruction. Now, I know there's nothing new about making out at the drive-in, but is there no where else for the kids to "go parking" up there than to pay $11.00 for two? Big Grin

Unless you have family here, I see nothing that would make someone ever want to move here except maybe the mild winters and lower cost of housing. That's fine, but what the heck do you do when you GET here?

There is a back entrance to Key Cave. A very small opening on the side of the hill It is the way I go in. It’s been a while and I wouldn’t fit in the hole. It is a neat cave.

Have you been to Lacefield? Google it if you haven’t. Bankhead is one of my favorites.

You must join in some time. We usually take a gang when we go.

Im 27 and a life long resident of Florence, AL and have been looking for a job for over 7 months. I finally got into CDL school this week and am going to drive an 18 wheeler. There IS NO work here. I am way overqualified but I finally found a job delivering pizzas and will do that till I get my CDL. Florence, Al is a joke when it comes to opportunities. A person here is happy to be making 10 dollars an hour. 10 an hour! Think about it, $10 dollars an hour, 40 hours a week, 400$ a week Before Taxes! What can a person do on 1600 dollars a month besides pay bills and stay at home. The first priority should be to get some industry here so people can work and make a DECENT LIVING. The reason Im not at Wise is because they have over 5000 current applications on file and with Wise and TVA your mom or dad has to work there pretty much for you to get a job. Dont get me wrong Florence is a gorgeous place to live and I feel safe here and my family is here. It will always be my home. But if you work here and are honest you will be scraping the bottom of the barrel like all the low paid, well trained people here as well as the 10% unemployed which is one of the highest in the state! And PS we do not NEED another freaking place to eat around here (except Hooters lol)Smiler
