I've always wondered about this time to time. God created the earth and Adam appears and then Eve. If they were the only two people on earth and started a family how did so many last names come up. Even if their kids married each other they would still have the same last name.

I have no idea what the answer is at all. I just happened to think of this question and put it on here.

My take on it is that the Bible doesn't give a minute-by-minute, exact, itemized run down of all that was created, so why mention all the people that were created? Adam and Eve and their story got mentioned because of the importance of what they did.

Now you're talking. Now it still makes me wonder how things really happened when the Bible was written. How were all these people actually created and have all these different last names.

In many countries, people don't have family names. The english system, for many families, started when their possessions were entered into the Domesday (Doomsday) Book for taxation purposes. Smith - blacksmith, silversmith, etc. Fletcher - arrow maker. Porter -- guard. Etc. Before, usually only nobles had family names.

Is there proof to that ?
Does this help answer your question, Hound Dog Blues?

Genesis 11:6-9
6 The Lord said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other." 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel--because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
I remember learning, like interventor says, about the Doomsday book and about last names for taxation.

In the Bible, I did always get bored reading Numbers and reading the bagats, begats & begats. So and so begat so and so... But I thought it was cool that there were 14 generations between Abraham to David, 14 between David and away of Babylon and 14 generations to Christ. Nerdy, but cool.

Would this not lead to retarded children? It would be the same blood line.

If one believes in a literal interpretation of the Bible, the gene pool would have been perfect--no mutations. Many mutations today are caused by chemicals or other modern teratogens. So, siblings, etc., could have married and produced quite normal children.

Well, that's what they taught in Western Civ I. One of my middle class lines is Meacham, meaning stone mason. I've heard the name Roosevelt depricated as simply meaning one who lived in a rose field, nothing so great about that apparently.
