I'm too lazy to look up numbers and such, but I'm pretty sure that locally we are in a recession.

For the last seven years, our business has taken about one "bad" check every month. (We are lucky, and usually the check isn't bad, but it is returned to us by the bank as NSF). For the last six months I've seen an increase that started out as a slight increase, but has excelerated [I can't spell] accelerated in the last 3 months. Last month we had five checks returned, and two since the first of this month.

Some of this may be due to the fact that the "float" on checks has been virtually eliminated, but I don't think this accounts for all of these checks.

I look around and see new BIG houses being built, and seems like they are all selling- big dollars. I still see people driving around in big gas guzzlers and filling them up. Restaurants seem to be doing just fine. I am believing I am the only one that these higher prices on everything is affecting. Kinda gives me a complex actually .
our businesses are doing well right now, and I see the same things excel is noticing. In the Shoals and AL., we didn't get the pendulum swings that they have experienced in other parts of the country, where real estate, housing starts, car sales, luxury items, etc, were flying off the shelf at one time, and lately they can't move anything. Here, it seems much more steady.

No inexperienced, leftist Obama with questionable associations for this wise family.
Those guaranted credit card applications keep coming in - which is one of, if not, the biggest problem. You can charge just about everything as long as you make the minimum payment, So, you can pay around $500 a month in payments as long as you do not mind never paying for the merchandise or restaurant bill and paying the terrible interest rates. many people live like this in a much more exravagant life style than I do. I call this lifestyle "How to Live on Nothing a Year" which is the name of a chapter in Thackeray's "Vanity Fair" which I was required to read in the dark ages. Nothing feels better than living in a paid for house and driving a paid for car!

Don't feel 'complexed'. Every piece of money I have is affected. I got my 'incentive' check today. Literally, I bought apples, oranges, bananas, and will spend the rest on gas. Normally, I can't afford ANY of these luxuries, anymore. Thanks for my 'incentive'.

Oh no hun, you are not alone. I have asked myself over and over what these poor people are doing that have to drive 20 min or so to work and make under 10 bucks. I mean how do you afford to live now on that? I concluded they must be doing without.

I know we are cutting back on extras. Less eating out, movies, shopping. Now that money is going into saving or paying debt off. I just dont know how bad it will get before it gets worse, so I want to be prepared.

If Florence/The Shoals had public transportation like busses, would anyone on here be interested in using it? I know I would. This might make a good poll considering the price of gas, food and everything else.

I would especially if they were electric like the ones in Chattanooga . I think it would add a lot of class if they put back in a trolley like they used to have. (even a trackless trolley would be great like they have in Seattle ).
I would love to see more side walks in the mall area. There are a lot of people who live in the middle of Florence but I just don't feel too safe walking in the middle of the road with the way some folks drive.

Just this past Friday afternoon we needed to get a few groceries from Wally-World and the old changed in the Honda. I dropped my wife off at Wally world and then dropped the car off at Damson Honda. I walked back up to WM through the grass and was thiking of other places we could walk or ride a bike of only there were some side walks.

.I bet you got some strange looks, too. It's funny to me how people react to you when you choose to walk. I live fairly close to a small store and sometimes on a pretty day th kids and I enjoy walking there and back.

But I cannot tell you how many times people have stopped and asked us if we needed a ride, if we were broke down, if we were okay, etc. My favorite, though, is just the look that some people give you like "why in the world are those people walking "?

I've got a feeling we're all going to be riding bikes and walking more as gas goes up. I know I will.
