Has anyone else been watching Lockup: Holman Extended Stay on MSNBC? It is really interesting, while really perplexing. I had no idea that inmates had so many rights - like the right to property. They have books, CD players, pens, razors, all sorts of stuff. Their family members are allowed to send them shoes, belts, food, and personal care items. I guess I figured if you were in jail, you didn't have any 'things'. Very weird.

Another thing that struck me is - they have a huge problem with inmates making weapons. Yet - they allow them to have metal belt buckles, metal utensils in the dining hall, and access to razors! WHAT? I don't see why. If I were the grand warden - no metal on the belts. They can wear pants that fit or tie them up Karate style. No utensils in the cafeteria (period). You can eat a bacon/egg/cheese biscuit for breakfast or drink your cereal like my kid does. Have a sandwich with chips for lunch and a nice piece of fruit. Dinner would be pizza, chicken, soups, stew, etc... things you can eat with your hands or drink from a cup.

Seems like a lot of drama is caused in the prison because of someone's need to make the prisoner's feel comfortable and at home. What is your opinion?
It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

I saw that. I am like you, SHOCKED, that our Prison system is so different than others around the Country.

I have seen at least a dozen of the Lock-Up's and NONE of them allowed a minute percentage of what Holman does.

How did you like that box cutter they made out of 2 perfectly cut pieces of wood and a razor blade taken from their razor and all glued together, it almost looked storebought.

It ain't home, but it didn't look that bad to me, especially compared to all the other Prisons across country.

Their Church Service had a bigger following than what I thought it would be, and they all 'looked' so happy.

Alabama's Holman was almost the opposite of all the others I watched.

No wonder Tommy Authur wants to stay.
For the most part, inmates have more rights than you do.
They are in "protected custody," therefore it's hard to deny them certain things for fear of a lawsuit.
Is it right? No way.
Can anything be done about it? I doubt it.
Remeber what Jimmy Hoffa said (and it's odd that I've mentioned him twice today in these forums):
"In the old days all you needed was a handshake. Nowadays you need forty lawyers."
Clark Kent, if you start watching the Extended Stays Documentaries on MSNBC then you will see that they ARE INDEED denied a LOT of things that people take for granted.

That is why when Holman's came on I was shocked at how very much MORE Alabama offers than Prisons in California, Kansas, New Jersy, New York, Florida, Arizona, Texas, Oregon, Tennessee, North Carolina, and a few other State Prisons I have watched the stories on.

They give an extremely basic list of what they can have, and their families CAN NOT send them anything but money which goes into their bank account onsite. They use that money for their toiletries and such.

Alabama was just SOOOOOO different.
I saw that vast collection of "box cutters" that they confiscated. They looked very nice. Looks like our prisons have some awesome craftsmen in there.

I know that some things are necessary - metal pots and pans and food prep items. But... it seems like there are so many holes, so many ways for these guys to create weapons.

How are these people getting drugs in prison?? That one little squirrelly guy said he smokes pot almost every day (and then he PASSED a drug test!). The guards are outnumbered 10 to 1, and they have a huge shortage of applicants.

I can see why, a good buddy of mine was a prison guard at Donaldson and then transferred to Limestone. He said it was a horrible job. First you have to be POST certified - just like a police officer. Second - the pay stinks. Third - the hours are long and the emotional stress of being in that situation for just 8 hours would be bad, but 16??? geez. I don't even want to be at my "cushy" job for 16 hours at a time.

Anywho - I felt bad for the poor woman who worked the mailroom. She just caught a hard time all day!
I think they shouldn't have ANYTHING in the cell with them. They would have to watch TV from their cell and it would be in a central location so most of the inmates can see it if they want. I think they should have to wear those JESUS JAMMY'S and if they go from one area of the prison to the other they would have to strip and put on other JAMMIES so there would be no way to hide anything on them. I think they should have seperate time outside without any concact with other inmates and their food should be sandwiches served on paper plates. They should make an inmates stay in jail as inconvenient as possible so they have no will what so ever to want to come back!

Tommy Arthur would not be in the regular lockup, but on death row. From what I've read about it: Each prisoner is in an individual cell. He's allowed to shower every other day. He's allowed one hour outside each day (he may or may not be able to talk to other death row inmates at that time). He is taken to the library or sick bay by himself during lockdown of regular part of prison.

I have not seen any of this show, but it would be interesting to get to see death row. I don't think any of them are enjoying it.
I watched that show about Holman and I couldn't help but think that it looks like a better option than a nursing home...sooooo...when you get on in years, just walk into a bank hand the teller a note, get sent off for ten years to Holman...they will provide your medical, dental, lodging, clothing, meals, exercise equipment,etc....without costing you or your family one thin dime... Wink

If you're aged or infirm, they will send you to the facility in Hamilton.

For the moron who wrote this...your version of prison is barbaric and inhumane which goes against what our constitution is about. We cannot treat these inmates like animals, we should take care, custody, and control of them while rehabilitating them for their return to society. 70% of these inmates will be released and I would rather have them rehabilitated than worse than before. Your version of prison of no contact with other inmates and your sandwiches, and tv theory is absurd. I really hope you make a mistake in life so that you can see how bad it already is instead of your version where it seems rather inhumane. You may say that you won't make a mistake but maybe someone you love, a friend or family member will be affected. Let's see if you feel the same way again.
