We just played our FIRST two jamboree games today in 7-8 yr old league. We already have several parents mad because their sons did not play today. We have 30 on our team. I love our parents......they are some of the best in the world. But why do parents get so mad over youth sports? What are some good suggestions on bringing everyone together especially the new parents???

I don't understand it myself, last year my daughter was a cheerleader for the micro's and I was shocked at how some of the parents acted on the sidelines.

They would scream and yell when their child messed up on the field. These kids would be just in tears. Its was just uncalled for in my opinion.

Kids today don't know what fun is because the parents want to live through them and be the best in everything. Just because maybe they were not the best when they were kids.

In my opinion, Parents need to stand back and let their children be themselves.

SO TIRED OF IGNORANCE....The coach needs to meet with all the parents and explain that not everyone gets to play each game and set the rules now that parents are not to interfere what so ever that he is the coach and if there is a problem come to him after the game and they will discuss it and don't be discussing it with other parents.

I want my child to enjoy sports and excel. There is way to much politic in Football and cheerleading.

Good luck in trying to reason with some parents
vick13...I totally agree. I know where and why the kids have the attitudes they do in many instances. Its really sad because a child that may have otherwise excelled at something they love in the future gives up because of the criticism and the game whatever that might be just isnt fun anymore.

Freebird, good advice - I just wish it would work. I have been around these parents for 3 years and I really love these boys to death. Its hard when two families that you really like and the kids play together are fighting with this one or that one because their child didnt get to play and that one did. Thing is we have 30 kids and especially in a jamboree game, all are just not going to get to play. My son is a linebacker just barely made the weight limit so most kids dont want his job....he stays in all the time. But like I said, most kids PARENTS want that running back position that quarter back etc. I just see the kids under so much pressure at such an early age and I am scared we are breaking the spirits of some talented athletes but most of all some really great kids
I think the coaches did a good job for our jamboree this weekend. The problem at Brooks is that they allow to many so sign up. Some don't reside near or in Killen and other are allowed to sign up after the last sign up date. They alrady have to many and as of Friday were still allowing kids to sign up. The board members make sure their kids play and they don't care for the rest.

Colbert County does the right thing by having maxmium number of players that can play. It is based on first come first serve. Once the number is reached then no more sign ups.

I might have to agree with you this time....lol. Really it might be an injustice to everyone to have so many. I think the board members and coaches are simply trying to do the right thing by allowing them to go ahead and sign up. But it might be turning around and biting us all in the butt.
While reading these post,Memories of days LONG past came back my way. I saw a lot of the same things go on while coaching little league baseball some 30 yrs. ago. Pardon me for jumping on a soap box(and being a braggart),but the only parent I ever had complain about a son not "starting" a game was because his little brother started ahead of him.go figure- I tried to play every kid every game.If one didn't,he started the next game. Granted,we only had 15-16 kids on each team. However nine played at a time. McFarland, Robbins Field,ORIOLES!!!!!! Big Grin
The rules should be changed to the way Little League (real Little League, not youth basesball) Baseball does it. it is mandatory all children get into the game. These leagues are for learning. The parents who want to relive their chilhoods should join a semi-pro team somewhere and leave the kids alone.
Have a sign up dead line & enough time after that to see how many kids, better to have 3 teams or two teams with less player so more kids get a chance to LEARN by getting to PLAY MORE parents are happy & I am sure the kids would be! at this age it should not be about winning , yes if you win under these rule Great, the one that said their son played line backer the whole game, why not swap him out with at lest another or maybe two other players, as HOT as it is , would give him a break, Each Kid that comes to Pratice should get to play & the very ones who don't , they maybe the very one by time they get into high school , grown to be a Great Player, a lot of kidon't start growning in size untell 13 or 14, if they drop out at an early age because of not getting to plat all, you may never see them go out for high school. Sports should be fun & learning of how to win & loose. At this age not about making a Supper Star out of a few .
I played Dixie Youth softball when I was a kid, and it was a rule that every child had to play at least so many innings each game. Is football different? I haven't coached Dixie Youth, but I have coached soccer and T-Ball at the YMCA and the rules there were that the coach had to insure that each child played an equal amount of time. You just rotated the kids out (in soccer) every few minutes and in t-ball, every inning.

I agree with Bamafnatk, they should have a sign up day or days, with a definite cut-off. Then if there are enough kids for more than 1 team, make more than 1 team. As an aside, it was my understanding back in the day that Dixie Youth was not to be associated with the school, but rather with the community. So a community could have more than one team, yes?
I coached for the YMCA program at one school , & I found that out of 5 teams in the younger age groups , yes some teams & coaches was head sit to make sure that certain kids got most all the playing time, so when time to go out for Jr High, yes these kids had the advantage & yes some was the better players, but for a good reason when they nver came out of a game or was never told they wasn't going to start & play the whole game no matter what, so yes after from the 6 year old untell try outs for Jr High they would make the teams, Now I coach with Royal Av Rec Center in Florence & it was Great the kids was from as many as 5 defferent schools & each player played one quarter or more by the rules & someone watching to see that rule happened. because yes some coach didn't want to have to put a weak player in the game when behide in a game. So it a two way street , the parents need to know the rules & the coaches should know & follow them , a lot less reason for a miss understaning Or as some say Mad Parents
I ref'd youth football in colbert, franklin, lauderdale, and south tennessee for several years, as well as HS football and Dixie youth girls softball. I finally became sick to death of it all. While I enjoyed H.S. sports, the youth leagues were a different story. It is still hard for me to believe so many adults could behave so childish. This includes coaches and parents. I have seen it all. While most parents and coaches were great, there were so many who were complete jerks, and some other words that can't be used in a public forum. For my part I would ban organized youth sports, and save it all for High School where the coaches are at least for the most part professional. I think until they are in at least junior high, they should take all the kids to a field with all the equipment they need along with one adult to keep it organized, and tell all the rest to go home, and come back in a couple of hours. Then the kids could have fun like kids are supposed to.

AMEN!!! It is my son that plays linebacker. I agree. I thought when we got this many kids signed up that they would give him some down time. I am absolutely for it! However, that has not happened "yet". But we have just played the first game - the past two years we didnt have a line and only 1/2 the players so him staying in wasnt really an option or a problem. I am NOT BRAGGING this is just to tell the facts so we get honest opinions! But he just does not complain he does his job well and they want him in all the time. Like I said several times He is 7 yrs old 4'9" 115. MOST KIDS dont want his job they dont even want to hit against him in practice. most kids/parents want that running back position "super star" etc. The coaches dont want to put 1st years up against a returning line because it might turn them off getting hit by boys this size before they get the fundamentals down. I know our coach loves the kids and I beleive it will work out. County football is about winning though. I know the boys love to win, but I want everyone to get the experience at this age too.

I would think that there could be several reasons why parents might get upset that their child didn’t play. First of all these are pay to play sports. Second of all, if there were two games that day, then surely there were plenty of opportunities to play every child.

I agree with Confederate Pride. There should be a limit at sign up. In our experience with flag football, only five are allowed on the field. The maximum numbers of players for each team have been eight. There are two 20-minute quarters that allows plenty of time for each child to have game time. Same with baseball, there’s usually only a max of 12 players per team.

At this age, it’s all about them learning fundamentals of the sport in my opinion. I’ve never signed our boys up to play for something unless they’ve asked me first. Our oldest is in middle school and I’m glad he’s in the position to have to work and want before he can play.
