Really surprised at the support the man is getting. Distracted driving is distracted driving. So, if people don't have a problem with someone eating while driving, they need to shut up about people talking and texting on their phones while driving. I'd be a lot more worried about a driver distracted because they're stuffing their face than a driver that has over parked for two minutes while the parking enforcement officer stands there waiting to write them a ticket. I think this is just one more silly complaint against the police doing their job.

=======================================

A man was cited for allegedly distracted driving in Georgia when a police officer saw him eating a cheeseburger while behind the wheel, according to ABC affiliate WSB-TV.

The police officer in question, whose name has not been released, cited Cobb County's distracted driver law, and the driver has a court date scheduled for Feb. 3, the Atlanta station said.

"Maybe I was enjoying the burger too much. I needed to tone it down,” driver Madison Turner told the station. “I was certainly willing to do so but I didn’t expect to be fined or punished.”

Cobb County Court would not comment to WSB-TV because the case is ongoing, but Turner's attorney said he expects it to be overturned because many drivers, himself included, eat and drive.

"I’ve only seen something like this charge when there’s an accident,” attorney William Head said to WSB-TV. “There was no accident here, so the fact that this man was charged with eating and driving is a first for me.”

Are all people on their cell phones distracted and swerving or speeding? Are all people not belted in distracted and swerving or speeding? The possibility is there. Distracted while eating is one hand on the wheel and the other on food, looking over to pick up food, and his reaction if the food is dropped in his lap, just to mention a few.

CONFESSION:

I once ate a half rack of Dreamland ribs while driving from Birmingham to Montgomery on I-65.  I did not get any sauce or meat fragments on my clothes,  I did get just a little on the steering wheel, but not enough to interfere with a secure grip with the one hand I was steering with. The plain white bread offered no difficulty of course.

I also once consumed two of the $1.00 cups of Wendy's excellent chili while driving on the open road.

I will not do any of that again, however, since it does indeed fit the description of "distracted driving."

I reserve the right to eat certain less complex "snack foods" while driving, since that can be done without distraction.

 I think the harm of distracted driving has been shown plenty of times, no matter what the distraction, and again, stuffing their face would certainly be a distraction, and that is what, in my understanding, the ticket was for. Not eating, but distracted driving. Like the man shaving that was ticketed, the woman shaving her private parts, yes, shaving her private parts, and causing an accident. There was no ticket given them for shaving, but certainly for distracted driving.

stupid is as stupid does..... how many people are killed in auto wrecks? the most dangerous thing most people do is get behind the will of a 3000 pound vehicle. stop the "its all about me" behavior, how long does it take to pull over and eat the burger? will your life be ruined if you don't answer that text? can you put your make up on before you leave home?

Another reason why I believe in bright line law, not laws that are overly subjective, to be interpreted by a LEO or prosecutor at their discretion,  Is sipping your coffee, listening to the radio, driving with children, glancing to a map or GPS  for directions, and such distracted driving if their is no evidence of actual distraction if the vehicle is traveling at a legal speed, not swerving , braking for no reason, or otherwise giving a reason for stopping the vehicle.

NEVER saw cop eating a donut. Never saw a cop eating anything in their car, or smoking, or drinking anything come to think of it. Wonder how I miss that stuff when apparently that's all they do. When they're not 'oppressing' people that is. I would say they're all hiding, but that can't be it either, because they're out there giving tickets to all those poor folks that aren't doing anything.

You want to talk about distracted driving, I've seen plenty of them staring at their computer screens while driving down the road.  The donut thing was a joke.

Well, I guess since they weren't speeding or weaving it's OK.
