Under the topic of things, I never thought I'd be researching, I'm having to consider the purchase or acquisition of a mobility scooter for my wife who is having an ever increasingly difficult time walking.  It is almost to the point that her legs and feet do not work any longer and she stays at home almost constantly rather than venturing out and enjoying life.   She's expressed some desire in considering a "scooter" but this is one area I am totally ignorant of other than there can be some expense in procuring one and there are wide varieties of them out there.  That also means that there are plenty of people/vendors that are looking to take advantage of people's ignorance or need.

I keep telling myself I don't need to concern myself with this because according to the government my wife isn't handicapped or disabled or so they said when they turned her down for disability so at least I have the official government notice that she is not disabled but that helps little when it comes to reality.

So what I'm wondering, if anyone has experience or knowledge in this area, what is the best route to go?  I'm hoping not to have to put a trailer hitch on the back of the vehicle and lug some super heavy scooter around and would rather have something that is highly mobile, durable, and light enough to pack up and carry around easily yet is durable enough to provide some distance to the user such that it doesn't run out of charge every time you use or need it.  I've seen such wide fluctuations of prices in them also that I wonder if there is a situation where one is a great deal better than another?   Are the light-duty models that are easily folded up and put in a truck bed or back seat decent for mobility or do I need to look for the more substantial models that require some kind of carry around trailer hitch mount for moving them from one location to the next?

Any and all serious answers are, in advance, appreciated.
