I've posted a few topics that had to do with moves that some theaters were going to in order to stay relevant and compete against services like NetFlix but those post dealt with moves which I just thought were not too advisable for a theater showing movies such as converting some seating into beds.  This article states that many theaters are going upscale to up-sale movies and offering services the are targeted to elite moviegoers.

I may be wrong but sometimes I think that the theaters have just experienced more to do with family finances than movie fatigue.  I, my own opinion, believe that two other factors have affected the drop off in theater moviegoers.  First theaters continue an never ending rise in ticket prices which along with the enormous gouging price of drinks, popcorn and snacks means a trip for two could easily go over $35-$45 a trip/night.  That might not seem much to some for a night's entertainment but when you add that on top of a nice meal then it becomes a big deal to some.  Here in having theaters offering dinner with their movie could attract a segment of some rather than the movie alone but I don't know that figures are in that would enable judgment to be made as of yet.

As second factor, that I believe, is playing a part is the quality of the movies being offered out of Hollywood today.  While, yes, there are some good and entertaining movies today there are more than ever productions and movies being made that have a subtle and not so subtle political slant or agenda.  Some movies that push a global warming or liberal political agenda and while that may appeal to half of the people the other half may not care to pay to be indoctrinated.  I think, though, that price pays a big part in the issue and that means price also that the Motion Picture industry has added what with cost of making feature films exponentially rising in some cases due to technological improvements with digital productions as well as actor and actress salaries that some are demanding these days.  Cost of a feature film has greatly risen to the point that it's more difficult for a film to make a profit in its initial showing/opening.  Maybe it isn't as simple as price and I'm all wet here but those two main causes I cited played big in my decisions to bypass movies at the theater for say viewing at home and waiting for the feature movies to hit the DVD's and Digital offerings on On-Demand type broadcasting from home.

One last thing that has helped the desire of movies at home is that while Theaters have immersed the movie public and Theater going public with awesome sound and "Big Screen" entertainment Technology that homeowners can purchase and have at home have greatly increased the home viewing experience what with high quality Televisions with UHD absolutely awesome picture quality sets,  up to even 90 inches in size, and equally awesome and transfixing audio from receivers, speakers, and sub-woofers as well as surround sound improvements that really put a viewer in the total viewing experience right there in their own home.  Home viewing has improved greatly

European theaters had bars for decades.  Remember rather nice ones in Berlin during a film festival.

I wasn't aware of that, or I didn't realize it.  But then Europe as with other parts of the World are able to have Passenger Trains, High Speed Passenger Tain travel where as in America it hasn't and wouldn't go over.  I'm sure there are many other differences both in way of life as well as governments and morals.

Those high speed passenger trains have become quite expensive.  Government subsidies have declined and none break even.  OTOH, US freight trains are much more efficient that European ones, faster and make a profit. That why one finds trucks on European highways with two and three trailers attached.
