I worked with two former members of the USS Independence Aircraft Carrier and I can remember one of them telling me about a event that happened in the Mediterranean Sea where a Russian sub had surfaced in the wake of the Independence carrier unannounced or without us detecting them being there until they popped up and said hi.  He told me his awareness was when the ship put him up against the side of a hall as the ship made an emergency evasive manuver.  I remembered that when I saw the following link/video from the Weather Channel.

That said I thought about the two recent high profile accidents involving two destroyers and knowing the size and weight ratio and power that they have seeing how this carrier can move it just reinforces that much more how each ship should have been easily able to out manuver or skip away from any pending danger from a huge cargo ship.

Lets just hope that someone hasn't the ability to take over our radar systems and leave our ships unprotected and that the events of the last year are the last that the Navy experiences ever again with the ships we have.   Now the Abraham Lincoln is an older ship even though it was refurbished makes you wonder about the capabilities of the newest carriers, like the Gerald R. Ford.  One thing is for sure if you are an adversary the last thing you would want turning your way would be one of these bad boys.  Lets at least hope that's what an adversary would think.
