This story was on the front page of today's NY Times and as I was reading it I was wondering what to make of it myself. I checked a number of sites and no one has commented on it so far so we will have to wait.

I tend to believe it because we are seeing Taliban forces on the rise in Afghanistan and there has been a string of suicide bomber attacks in Pakistan. According to another story in the Times today's attack was the 6th in a few short weeks. I have been following those also. I have been reading that al Qaeda and extremists were strong in this region and Musharref singed a treaty with the tribes in that region and withdrew Pakistani troops back from the border. He hoped diplomatic as well as economic aid would pacify the discontent in the region but it was too little too late. That treaty was denounced by US at the time and ridiculed as a failure in this article. Also many in the Pakistani Military support the Taliban as a puppet, ally and wedge against India, as well as Iran and China.

The US blunders in Afghanistan and then the attack and occupation of Iraq strengthened al Qaeda and increased anger and hatred of US in the region. As we knew it would. It was just what bin Laden wanted. he went from being ignored to supported.

They are already poor and resentful in the region and a prime recruiting area for bin Laden. We did nothing in Afghanistan to alleviate the poverty and corruption and only reinstalled the hated War Lords who the Taliban overthrew. The people hated them so much they backed the Taliban. But then the Taliban were so brutal and strict they did nothing to support them during the US invasion but now hate the US some much, for our corruption and indiscriminate killings and bombings, they are now backing the Taliban again. It is a hot bed for extremism and Nationalism to drive the West from the region.

And as the article mentions the tapes al Qaeda are releasing are increasing and becoming more timely and up to date.

Still, keep in mind al Qaeda itself is still a small minority but there is poverty and discontent in the region and around the world that bin Laden feeds upon. And as I say, Bush's wars and the scapegoating of Muslims in general in the West has fueled this anger, even in the West as we saw with the London Bombings.

Israelis continued aggression against the Palestinians as well as their bombing an attack in Lebanon has also fueled this anger, in the region and world wide.

Simple Police work and international cooperation had crippled al Qaeda's leadership and held it in check but Bush's war and the Western intolerance helped it reform.

Until the US addresses the problems of region, instead of being the problem, extremism will grow.
