As a veteran forum poster on the net...I have witnessed a lot of sick people. I honestly believe we have that here. The way this forum is set up, a person can create as many IDs as wanted, and I think just that is happening.

Nothing like a little personal backup is there?

Surely they do; this would tick people off and make them stop posting if everybody got more than one ID and completely confused a conversation. I guess we could ask them.

I use 3 or 4 locations and 1 ID

Sorry, that was a duh moment. I use the laptop when travelling. The IP address (thanks, Uber) would be different for my home computer and my laptop, right? Yet I'm able to access TimesDaily Forums from both. So, I guess the answer is yes, someone could have more than one ID. That really stinks.

My apologies, Mott, although I am NOT accusing anyone of doing this. You know, if it were not for the fact that some of your posts make my blood pressure shoot out the top of my head, I'd unblock you. Smiler

Same here. I think the best thing is to make it more difficult for people to have multiple accounts. Not allowing multiple accounts to be active on one IP would help, but it would also cause some problems (multiple TD users on one computer would have issues, for instance) and people with multiple computers or people using proxies can get around it. I'll think on this later.
I knew about the old forum before the TD website was updated but never participated. In fact I only looked at it once and never went back. Seems kind of strange now to think about it. I activly participate in several other online forums for hobbies and such. Just never sought one on local interests.

Most of the ones I frequent don't allow multiple registration. The one or two that do allow it are overburdened with trolls and alts. I just don't understand the need.

I've enjoyed finding this place. It's interesting to check in and catch up on everything. I've had this username since I started reading the TD online. Didn't see the need for a catchy handle. My initials and name will do fine. Keeps me from putting anything on here I'd be ashamed of. Maybe one of these days I'll have my post count up there with some of you guys but if not I'll be here in the background, checking you all out.

Correct, and it gets even better. If you're using a router that uses a program called DHCP to assign computers IP addresses, the IP address of your laptop might one day get reassigned to your desktop or vice versa.

Now a computer can be isolated using it's network card's MAC address. MAC addresses are unique numbers assigned to the specific device that connects a computer to a network, like an Ethernet card or wireless card for laptops. Whether the forum admins could make use of something like that, I'm not sure. I'm giving a presentation on web design and web development education today, so I'll have more time to figure something out tomorrow.

Well said. Wouldn't this forum, and the world in general, improve when held to a higher standard? If people considered their words carefully because they would be held "responsible" for them, it might solve many problems. I do believe in freedom of speech. But let those who speak recognize the power within EVERY word. Every word has the power to build up or to destroy. Even words we speak believing them to be of no consequence (idle words) are important.

Matthew 12:35-37
A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
That is something I have commented on TO TimesDaily several times, heck, I have even been accused of being someone other than myself.

I think that TimesDaily could and should check out each person, their email address and their ISP.

Honest people will not mind providing TD with their names and email addy's.

Multiple accounts are dishonest and wrong, no matter how you slice it.
One way to avoid this is to dis-allow web based e-mail accounts for sign up. This software will allow you to refuse access to such accounts as g mail or yahoo and hotmail accounts. If you have to use an ISP account it helps to some degree. I'm not too web savvy but anything that can be enabled before the problem gets worse would be a good thing, or so it seems to me.
