It was always frustrating trying to find a parking space especially earlier the mornings after the 8:00 classes. I tried to get to campus at least an hour before my class so i would have ample time to find a space. One semester i got so aggravated i started parking at the public library on wood avenue and just walking down there to campus! Its not all that far and was a pleasant walk.
Ample parking is something that is rarely found on a college campus. I have always said a college education is more than just about the classroom, one of the "outside the classroom" lessons people get in college is problem solving and the lack of parking and allowing ample time to get to class is just one of those lessons.

Obviously, my point was completely missed. I attended college enough in my life to understand that finding the elusive parking spot is a unique and unavoidable side of college life. BTW, I don't need a lecture on getting to class on time, reponsibility, blabla...I have never been late to a class. My point was in the front of BGH there are 4 rows of parking for students and then on the other side there is 4 times the spaces for faculty and staff. These parking places are not even one third full during the summer. Why will they not let students park there? What will it hurt? What is the ratio of faculty and staff to student? Doesn't it make sense to have more student parking places than faculty?

Yes, it does Grits. But you are singing to the choir. Parking has been a nightmare at UNA for many years. I graduated in 1999, it was a nightmare then. They now have a parking deck and I can't tell that it is one bit better. Roll Eyes

While I agree that the parking situation is not ideal, I'm not wholly certain it's as terrible as it's made out to be. f I have classes in Bibb Graves, Keller, or Wesleyan I park in lot Z; if I have class in Stevens or Floyd I park in the deck or in lot O if there's no room there. And after 4 PM of course all parking spots are open to everyone, so during night classes I park in the teacher lot next to Willingham. I also tend to budget my time and leave for class 30 to 45 minutes in advance so I'm not rushed.

I'm hoping the Darby parking center is successful but I'm unsure how strongly they plan to enforce this policy.

When I was attending UNA, I could always find a parking place somewhere.   It wasn't always as close as I wanted, so sometimes, I did have to walk.   Get to the campus before 7:30, and you'll have your choice of parking.   Also, there is the parking deck down town, where UNA buses are running to and from continually.

The 4 rows of parking in front of BHG is by far not the only place for students to park.

KissedGrits saw wasted space and had a logical response.  Way to think, KG.  It's a valid question and a great idea.  All that needs doing is to move the line over which separates student and faculty parking.  Wasted space when space is limited is not making the most of your resources.  It's quite silly to do something simply because that's the way you've always done it.

Imagine this same question regarding the parking lot at your place of business.  A line separates upper level employee parking from lower.  Many spaces in upper level parking are not utilized.  If upper level parking is minimized, a greater percentage of lower level employees can park closer to the front door.  I would offer that as a more logical plan whether I were upper or lower level on the employee chain.

Regardless if I were faculty or student at UNA, I would offer this as a more logical plan.

Irrelevant comment. It does not good if one can afford a car and college if they can't even get their car there. UNA has less parking spots than registered vehicles. The university just has poor planning skills, and they call themselves a university, but they don't act like one at all.

Sometimes you just have to use a little brain power.   Exert a little effort for what you want, meet the challenge.   If you want a good parking place, get there early.   Check into the off campus parking/shuttles.  Carpool.   It's a small university...you may not like having to walk further, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.  Of course there are more registered cars than spaces...they are not all there at the same time, so that only makes good sense.   Should UNA cut off enrollment according to parking?

Buy a bicycle rack.  Mount it on your car.  Put your bicycle on the rack before you leave home.  When you get to UNA, find the nearest parking space to the building where you have classes.  If that space is too far away for you to conveniently walk to class, then remove the bicycle from the bicycle rack, mount it and pedal yourself to your destination.  You will then have the bicycle available for convenient travel between all your classes for the remainder of the day.

I don't have a problem with travel from class to class. The campus is tiny. I have a problem finding a space at the beginning of my day.

I have class at 8 in the morning every day and even the parking decks are full to almost the top level. UNA shouldn't cut off enrollment according to parking, but they shouldn't get rid of parking spaces to build over, or close over half of the GUC parking lot almost every day. They should make decisions to better accomodate for those forced to pay for parking in general. (even if you don't have a car, you have to pay, if you want the fee refunded, you have to provide proof that you do not own a car, which is practically impossible)

Then use your bike to get from wherever you park to your first class.

I take it that you didn't read anything from my comment. The bike is NOT the issue. I don't care about walking from class to class, read what I said. It's an issue finding the spot to park in for my first class.
