Maybe that is why we are so poor - paying all these phone bills!!! Wink

If you have AT&T/Bellsouth you can drop the voice service. A few other carriers did the same thing but their names escape me. I did this with my AT&T account a month ago.
I voted no because I was considering a personal phone line. We did have two lines, one for personal use and one being the business line (home office). We ditched the personal line, but still have one for business. Friends and family don't call us on it though. They call us on our cell phones, which is why we decided we no longer needed a phone.
I had to vote "No" on this one...

The $600 annual cost savings is much nicer than having a “home phone” that rings with wrong numbers and auto dialers pitching aluminum siding or extended auto warranties. I do pay AT&T $30 a month or so for “DSL only” (without having to have a voice line) for internet. My personal cell phone (ATT) and firm Blackberry (Verizon) provide me with plenty of options and coverage (more minutes than I could ever use, free LD, internet, data, etc.).

I’m thinking the whole “home phone” thing is on its way out. If I absolutely, positively HAD to have a home phone, I would use Vonage or some VOIP service.

Oh, and one more thing...
Even if you have no home phone service, 911 will still work on your “old fashioned land line” home phone. Take a look at your next phone bill. You, I, and every other communications “subscriber” get hit each month with a “universal 911” surcharge on each bill that goes to help pay for 911 access. You would be surprised how many times I hear “I have to have it for 911” when in reality it will work even without being a subscriber (just like on old cell phones).

Fir, AT&T offers DSL without a landline now...I had ours cut off last month and now only have DSL. The Cell phones is not At&t. They gave us what they called a standalone line account number for the DSL.

Fir, I did the same thing. We still have the "phone line" for our internet but we don't have phone service. It cut our bill back over $60 a month. Of course, we use AT&T for our DSL and we don't have their cell phone service. It is worth it... Big Grin

I'm in the same situation and this makes me angry! I hate paying $45 for a phone that is rarely used. We use cell phones for out long distance calls and rarely use the telephone at all. But have to have it for the DSL Internet and satellite service.
OK, I might be the only one in the world without a cell phone. I have DSL and a land line phone at my house. I'm not that important to think I can't leave the house without a phone for a while, I know some people are important or think they are. Anyway, my question is, what does a cell phone cost per month? I had one years ago when it was cool to have one, now they're just annoying as hell.

Hey David,
Go here: Link and click on "get DSL without a voice line". This still doesn't fix your satellite issue though (having to have a phone line to dump data) but you could switch to cable for tv (get a promo rate for "switching"), still get rid of the phone and save the $45 a month (pocketing a cool $540/yr.).

I live in a "holler" between Greenhill and Lexington. Some call it Centerhill - I call it "way out here in the country!!"
I live in Lexington and we have not had a home phone for almost a year. We have dsl and satellite and both work fine.
i agree with "young old man"!! i have stand alone line DSL. no home phone.
i just cut my home phone off last month. all the dsl problems i have had came from the fact that i cut off the phone! none were with the service. every interruption i have had was from them "cutting off my service"! after the last time (monday night) i could most likely not pay the bill and they wouldn't cut it off now!!! hahahaha! Big Grin
i have had direct tv for over 6 years and never had it hooked to a phone line!!!!!!! Confused
I am going to check with Verizon. I am tired of being "phone" poor!

By the way, the reason most people have cell phones now isn't to be "cool" - I don't think. Who can afford to pay extra to be cool? Not me. I have one because I have a child in school and a couple of grown ones (in age only! Big Grin) that I want/need to know can reach me at anytime. That way when I leave I am not worried that one of them needs me (mainly the 8 year old - the oldest 2 could probably wait).
Yeah, I bet when home phones came out, the neighbors that didn't have them said the same things about those that do (they just want to feel important, show offs, etc).

Truth is, cell phones are now a given. My home phone was $45 a month plus long distance. And I am not home from 7:30 am to 6 pm. With a cell phone, nights (after 7 or 9) and weekends are free for around a $50 a month plan, so I would only have a couple of hours each evening to worry about burning minutes.

And I still have a home phone for 911. The phone company has to leave a dial tone on your line for your to call 911 even if you don't pay for phone service.

Kirk
If i was going to have a cell to be cool i wouldn't be using one that's four years old...with the cheapest rate plan available. For me, a cell is peace of mind where my son is concerned. Before the cell, i had a beeper for the same reason.
Since i have the cheapest cell plan i also have a landline at home, plus i still use dialup.
(For cell, landline, internet and cable i pay $90.00 a month Smiler )
I also have the at&t direct dsl for my internet-I wish we'd had it in the country-helluvalot better than dialup-no home phone, only a cell phone and its still as cheap as the landline alone-the only problem is Dish network keeps trying to charge me for the receiver not being connected to a phone line(which it is)-but after i got ahold of them last nite and threatened to turn off my dish service, they promised me that $5 a month charge will not be on my bill again-I have only good things to say about the stand alone at&t dsl service-at $19.99 a month with no taxes or fees its the best(and cheapest) fast acess service I've found. But at&t needs to get on the ball and run the lines so everyone can get access to this service!!
Nobody is denied 911 services whether you have a land line or cell phone. Land lines work as long as the phone is plugged in. Cell phones will work as long as the phone is charged.

There is one other thing that needs to be considered. Where does the money for 911 services come from? Phones, right? Well in today's world of cell phones and everyone getting rid of their home phones, believe me when I say that the funds for 911 services has drastically dropped. Cell phones have a charge, but it is a small percentage of the amount of the land lines. So you think yea! I can save a dollar a month. But you still expect a 911 center that can track your phone, a center with the best trained dispathers. How are these centers supposed to keep up with the technology without the funds. The equipment to keep up with the advancements costs of thousands of dollars. There are even companies out there that have No charge for 911 services.Companies that use VOIP (Vonage) are not considered phone companies so they don't have to pay. I don't believe people should be forced to pay for a home phone charge just to have a 911 service. But the money has to come from somewhere.
