Propaganda affects us all. It can be very difficult to recognize. The only major difference between the two is that advertising sells products, and propaganda sells ideals.

Increasingly, the corporate advertising of goods and services is being coupled with political, "moral" and religious value messages. Many people say that they don't pay attention to TV commercials and are not affected by them. They are mistaken. You might watch 1000 commercials for every time that you actually purchase something, or maybe you only shop for clothes at second hand stores, buy only used cars and bake your own bread. You are affected by advertising nonetheless. Much of the effective material is not in commercial advertisement, but in the TV shows that are broken up by it. It is called programming, probably for a reason.

Television shows and commercial advertisements have a lot in common, but television shows have more time to present complex messages. These can include simple things like product placement (E.T. and Reece's Pieces), which are relatively harmless, but messages are often geared towards behavior modification. This is propaganda.

We have reality shows to tell us how to be normal and show us how to react to stressful situations. We have talent search programs, which tell us what we should consider to be good and acceptable musical fare. We have sitcoms, which guide us through social and moral dilemmas. We have dating shows to show us what should be desirable in a partner, and shows like "Jerry Springer" to show us what is unacceptable.

Meanwhile, we quietly absorb the other messages about how to dress, what to buy, eat, and drink. The TV people are glamorous, and we quietly want to be like the successful happy ones, and avoid being like the ones carried off by the police. We are primates (creationists can ignore this, you will anyway) and we have a lot of things in common with our tree-dwelling cousins. Monkey see, monkey do. We copy behavior without consciously deciding to do so.Propaganda uses the same tools as advertising, but the messages are angled somewhat differently.

Propaganda tells us who we can trust, like the Government and its many agencies, well-dressed people driving shiny new vehicles, and the police. We should know better, and those of us who are paying attention, do. Propaganda also shows us who and what to hate. Dirty-clothes people who are all that way because they are bad. Poor, lazy people who all need to get a job. Foreigners who all want to destroy our way of life, except for the EU of course. Anybody who is different from the normal people that we see is suspect.

As people spend more time indoors looking at the idiot tube, real world experience decreases. We can shop and work from home. The TV people might be the people we see most frequently, this is certainly so with children who rarely play outside anymore. We learn from what we see, and when what you see isn't real, then you can learn unrealistic things without knowing any better. Soon people grow to trust, fear, or hate other people based on their representation on the screen. We never see it coming.

Propaganda programming most affects individuals who lack the life experience to see that they are being manipulated. By the time they go into the real world, if ever, they have firm notions of what to think based on years of vicarious experience. They can recognize bad people by their clothes and habits; they saw such things on "COPS." They know not to trust anyone that friendly, TV police would pick out of a crowd. Obliging "rebellious" youths even buy their bad-person-rebel uniforms at "HOT TOPIC" so the cops can easily identify them as such. If the TV is right, all Veterans are unstable, all bikers are bad, and all kids who push drugs wear ratty clothes and leather. Good people are clean, well fed, get good grades, are likable, and look just like everybody else who is good. (See: Friends, Seinfeld, and similar shlock.)

People often judge others based on what they see and sub-conscious associations relative to their "experience." It would seem that TV, first widely used by Hitler, is the best propaganda tool yet conceived. Corporate and governmental agencies employ armies of expert industrial psychologists to modify our beliefs. They produce messages designed to be appealing and persuasive to most, all the while representing other ideas as backwards, or otherwise inferior. The messages are repeatedly worked into commercials, movies or TV. Then they poll people to gauge the effectiveness of those messages for future reference.

Ideally, the entire culture becomes brainwashed as effectively as any fundamentalist Christian cult. We become predictable, docile, homogenous and paranoid of anyone not like us, all without conscious thought. We become weak. It is time to become conscious. A good start is unplugging your TV.

I really agree with what this has to say. The media plants the seeds to our minds and rubs it in until we believe it.

C.O.P.S. Reality TV show shows your lower class types getting caught at their crime. But what they fail to show is the white collars crimes. I'm sure you've got some white collars that beat their wives, sells and does drugs, but for some reason they plant the seed that it is only lower class people that commit crimes. Next time you watch C.O.P.S., notice it. No white collar or upper middle class doing crime. We know white collar crime is done here in the Shoals but you will never read about it in TimesDaily. When you have money, power, and influence, you can keep it out of the papers. And if you get caught, you might just be able to buy the judge.

Was the preacher white collar for real? I thought he might be of the fundamentalist Christian cult. Why does this upset you? Don't you want bad guys to be caught no matter the class type?

I remember, either it was on 60 minutes or Dateline many moons ago, watching a profile on COPS. They showed how everyone depicted on the show as criminals had to sign consent forms before they'd be aired on the show. Maybe the lower class types you are wondering about just want their 15 minutes of fame. It did, during the segment, show a woman with her face blurred out being pulled over for dui who was in a Mercedes and well dressed.

Then you haven't learned anything. I am a liberal ..... not a conservative. Your continuous nonsensical ramblings make the rest of us liberals look like morons. Thanks for the help.
Did any of you who disagree so strongly with PBA actually READ what the post was about, or did you automatically decide since HE posted it, you disagree.

It has been a WELL KNOWN fact that the Media is continually shoving propaganda down our throats. People on here has made that statement (using it for disagreeing with posts) on this forum so many times, and it has been made by people with all kinds of belief systems.

People who LIKE Bush/Cheney uses it when someone says something bad about them.

People who don't like Bush/Cheney uses it when someone says something GOOD about them.

COPS was just an example of the topic of the post, not the actual topic. But I have to say that I have watched it for many years, and their stops they show are definitely not the elite, never has been, never will be. And back when COPS first started, they didn't have to have anything signed, they got sued and changed their policy. I see it all the time in this area, and most on here have too. A beat up old car will be pulled over a LOT quicker than a brand new Hummer. Heck, I HAVE many friends who are Cops and we have discussed this. They too have their own set of "propaganda" meetings. Basically consisting of instructing them to what "profiled" vehicle don't have insurance, or proper paperwork, or what "profiled" vehicle fits the mold for drug activity. Which we are talking just PROFILE here, and it don't mean ALL cases, just the norm. They use those guidelines when they are patrolling the streets.

We are fed propaganda daily, and it is very difficult to weed through all of it to come up with the real truth.

I liken the Media with the Bible in the respect that a lot of people pick and choose what they want to hear (ie: Chapter/Scripture/Verse) and THAT is what sticks into their minds. Therefore the seed for propaganda is planted.

Right now, there are so many issues involving our government it is unreal, hard to unravel, and just confusing to the General Public interested in finding TRUTH.

PBA, you are right, PROPAGANDA AFFECTS US ALL. It plants its little seeds into minds, it grows either one way or another, then fed by more propaganda branching off what is already growing.

I read Reuters, USA Today, Times Daily, and any other Newspaper I can read. I watch CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, ABC and any other news network that gives their version of propaganda. I think I find "MY" balance by doing that.

Anyone that can sit and deny the fact that propaganda isn't put on your plate each and every day is literally putting their head in the sand.

Could not have said it better.
If you're going to talk about propaganda, you should learn the terms associated with it.

White propaganda is information whose source is known.

Grey propaganda is information whose source is in doubt.

Black propaganda is information whose source is obfuscated on purpose. For instance, KGB's Disinformation Bureau's propaganda spreading propaganda defaming US, but purportedly from US.
Or, OSS flooding the France with counterfeit German coupons to houses of ill repute.

Despite the bad reputation, propaganda is just information.
The OP has to be severely naive to believe that propaganda only comes from one direction.
The first post in this thread and the many repeated posts like it are also propaganda.

Every one of pba's posts is liberal-wacko, pro-gay, anti-church propaganda. If that's the way he/she feels, that is fine with me. I just get tired of this forum (which is for local news) being overly flooded with his or her nonsense posts.

I have many things that I feel strongly about, but I have no need or desire to flood this forum with a bunch of copy an paste, mickey mouse articles to prove my point(s).
Moyers Has His Say
Former Now host on media bias and his feud with former CPB Chairman Ken Tomlinson

by John Eggerton

Bill Moyers became the central figure in absentia in the controversy surrounding former Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) Chairman Kenneth Tomlinson. It was Tomlinson who pointed to Moyers' Now newscast on PBS as a chief reason for his efforts to bring “balance” to public broadcasting by adding conservative shows. Moyers has since left Now and is currently president of the Schumann Center for Media & Democracy. He spoke with B&C's John Eggerton in the wake of a CPB Inspector General report concluding Tomlinson had violated the law by dealing directly with a programmer during the creation of a show to balance Moyers' program.
You are the exemplar of liberal PBS bias, according to Ken Tomlinson. Was your show liberally biased?

Right-wing partisans like Tomlinson have always attacked aggressive reporting as liberal.

We were biased, all right—in favor of uncovering the news that powerful people wanted to keep hidden: conflicts of interest at the Department of Interior, secret meetings between Vice President Cheney and the oil industry, backdoor shenanigans by lobbyists at the FCC, corruption in Congress, neglect of wounded veterans returning from Iraq, Pentagon cost overruns, the manipulation of intelligence leading to the invasion of Iraq.

We were way ahead of the news curve on these stories, and the administration turned its hit men loose on us.

Tomlinson actually told The Washington Post that he was irate over one of our documentary reports from a small town in Pennsylvania hard-hit by outsourcing.

If reporting on what's happening to ordinary people thrown overboard by circumstances beyond their control and betrayed by Washington officials is liberalism, I stand convicted.

It is an old canard of right-wing ideologues like Tomlinson to equate tough journalism with liberalism. They hope to distract people from the message by trying to discredit the messenger.

Now threw the fear of God into Tomlinson's crowd because they couldn't dispute the accuracy of our reporting.

And when we weren't reporting the truth behind the news, we were interviewing a wide variety of people: Ralph Reed and Ralph Nader; Cal Thomas and Molly Ivins; Robert Bartley, editor of the Wall Street Journal; Katrina Vandenheuval, editor of The Nation; The Conservative Union's David Keene; Dorothy Rabinowitz (also of the Wall Street Journal); Charles Lewis of the Center for Public Integrity; the Club for Growth's Stephen Moore; historian Howard Zinn; and Indian activist Arundhati Roy. And on and on.

Did you get any direct pressure from Tomlinson or CPB to change the content of your show?

The people at PBS told me they were getting excruciating pressure because of our reporting, including threats to de-fund public television unless “Moyers is dealt with.” They never identified the source of that pressure.

We know now it was Tomlinson. [Tomlinson] even told some people [we have confirmed it with two people who were present] that “Moyers is a coward because he doesn't want to talk to people who disagree with him.”

Hello? See the above list of all the conservatives who appeared on the show.

What happened to the debate idea between you two?

PBA, all you ever post is propaganda. One preacher or Christian messes up and you're posting or saying something to make it look like all Christians are bad, or all Christians are Republicans, or all Republicans are Christians. It goes along with the whole COPS analogy about white and blue collar crimes that you posted. So do not start being Mr. Anti-Propaganda when that is what most of your posts consist of. Or should I say someone else's posts, you just pasted them here.
