Yes , I resent it. Our taxes are going up because the stupid people of Alabama refused to pass an educational lottery which I consider a tax on those wanting to pay it.
The total ignorance , propagated by a bunch of preachers has directly caused my property taxes to more than double, and i suspect will have tripled by the time it is all over, just like
Riley wanted them to.
As I see it, the people of Alabama turned their backs on the education of their children, and I see no reason to suppliment it any more. I personally vowed to vote against every single tax increase that is put before us.
This one is forced on us by Riley, who incidentally said he lowered our taxes - what a damm liar, and we could not vote for or against it.
What I would like to know is why every one is giving their state representatives and senators a pass on this issue. Shouldn't someone be saying things like "I'll never vote for that SOB in the legislature again!"? Instead the voters will return the same liars and thieves while giving a term-limited governor a verbal excoriation. The legislature would be the starting point for any change in legislation. More than likely it is the letter "D" or "R" in the parentheses that matters most.
Oh ancient one,
I couldn't agree with you more that we have a generally sorry lot representing us, but this one is solely on Riley. The re-appraisal executive order was NOT something approved by our legislative body. The real problem is the people of Alabama love liein' Bob , because Lucy Baxley promised in the last election that if elected, her first order of business would be to rescind that executive order. She was defeated, because Riley lied, and most people apparently vote for a Republican without caring anything about what they really stand for.
Technically the change to annual reappraisals was not by executive order and to change the law allowing those reappraisals we need to sweep out the current liars and thieves.

CLARIFICATION

Gov. Bob Riley's Press Secretary Jeff Emerson is correct when he says the governor has never issued an "executive order" requiring annual property appraisals. Shortly after Riley took office, his revenue commissioner, Dwight Carlisle, called for annual appraisals. Riley said he supported Carlisle. Riley's current revenue commissioner, Tom Surtees, said the appraisals are based on the state constitution and a federal judge's opinion. Emerson said Riley cannot rescind annual appraisals.

Emerson was reacting to an article on property tax collections in the Aug. 6 edition and to an online poll.

THE DAILY is happy to correct the terminology "executive order" and to add to the record.

If I am wrong, I apologize, but I still think that without Riley's support, we would not be being gouged on our property taxes.
Riley lied, our pocketbooks died !

No apology needed, you are partly right. The governor supported the revenue commissioner while serving as cover for the other liars and thieves. Your "Riley lied, our pocketbooks died !" statement only needs to be amended with the words "and our legislators " after Riley.
I posted this when this topic was in misc. Who's behind it? State governments needing more more.

According to my latest AARP magazine, all states are raising taxes to bring in more revenue.
The highest average five:
NJ $6320
Conn $4603
NH $4501
NY $3622
RI $3534

The lowest average five:
Ark $534
Miss $468
West Vir $457
Alabama $383
La $188

So don't complain, we are next to the bottom, which this time is a good thing.
I most certainly will complain. When you add everything up Alabama is not next to the bottom. Take Tennessee or Florida for instance. They both have high property taxes but no state income tax. It is less taxing to be in one of these states than Alabama when you add Alabama’s 5% income tax. Plus, Florida doesn’t tax groceries.
