Question for any Metal Detecting hobbiest

Metal Detecting is just one hobby that I have thought about joining and getting into. First, of course, is to decide upon a Metal Detector from the many there is. I have about decided to limit my selection to either one of the Minelab or Fisher models so if anyone has any experience with either I would appreciate a heads up and which you prefer and why.

Second, being that there are a lot of federal lands around and other areas with historical significance what are some of the laws governing relic hunting using a metal detector in the area?
