Is that not a double edged sword? Aren't there teachers here complaining because they are not paid enough? Yet they get great benefits thru the AEA, according to one poster, and are not required to pay state taxes on retirment by another poster, YET they are here saying they should be paid more. Did they not know these things when they chose that job as well?
That is a tricky wall to scale. No job is perfect, and the grass always looks greener on the other side.

Definitely, but the argument being made is that they are overpaid.
Teachers; wipe butts, clean up vomit, blow noses, hug kids with body odor, spend their own money for supplies, take kids home when their parents can't make it to school, break up fights , console kids when they cry, give them lunch money, face angry parents when issues arise, fund raisers, and along the way, try to teach....no matter how they may feel themselves. Are they overpaid, how do you put a price on a caring teacher?

All of the above just goes with the territory of being a teacher. No one held a gun to their head to go into to teaching.

Do I think teachers in AL are overpaid? No, but they are certainly adequately compensated with a competitive salary and attractive benefit package for their 187 day contracts considering the cost of living in this area and the median income.

I put in 12 hours at least 4 days a week and I work a full year, not just 9 months of it.

Actually it's worth it to me, I own the business.

Unless you’re a science or math teacher I think it's a big deal and you‘ve already told us you don‘t teach math however you did tell us that you're a teacher so now it's your responsibility to make the profession look good. When I was in school y'all would have counted off my grade for the error.
Ok, so you've already said you're not a math teacher, science? Please tell me it's not english. Science and math teachers are excused on both grammar and spelling and generally stink at it.
I mean all of the above in the nicest way possible Smiler
No sense arguing with you, Opie. Your mind has been made up since your first year in the 7th grade. I've met you and I have taught your child. Despite that fact, I am still teaching...although I did learn a lot from you. You are a role model for everything that is wrong with education, consequently, your input is very valuable.

From reading his post, I've been thinking he had a bad experience in Catholic school.

Being a homosexual street corner hooker does not count as owning a business Blowboy.

Those are every day occurences in the elementary classroom. Some of you think you know it all. Go and sub in any elementary school. Those kids will whip you and having running out the door crying. It ain't an easy job at all. I think Opie and Latoya have complexes from being treated badly at school. I'm sorry if you were treated badly. There are good teachers out there who care and want all their students to be successful.
sure thing. if you worked with the group I work with, you would think they were saints too. one lady has a child whose parents don't take good care of him. they don't make a whole lot of money, but don't provide any kind of care for this child. he comes to school daily without having brushed his teeth and smells really bad. this lady makes sure this child has clean clothes when he comes to school dirty. she helps him to brush his teeth and helps him clean up when he hasn't showered. this child wants to learn to read so bad. she gives him lots of extra time trying to help him. not only does she help with his basic needs, but she makes sure he has clothes to wear on certain dress up days. if it is crazy sock day, he has crazy socks. if it is school spirit day, he is decked out in a shirt with the school colors. sorry if I think so well of teachers, but I see things like this everyday.

I figured it was just a typo, I was just saying that as a teacher it sorta looked bad. I even said if you were math or science that noone would think anything of it as the better a person is at math & science the worse they seem to be with grammar.

Shouldn't you use good grammar yourself, if you are going to give someone else a hard time about it? I mean that in the nicest way possible TOO.

Not really, I didn't tell anyone I was a teacher so my writing doesn't reflect on an entire group of people. Add to that I have an excuse for poor grammar because I went to school in Tennessee Frowner
My mother, sister in law, and other family members are and have been teachers for over 30 years. All four of them have taught and coached. Not only were they mentors and GREAT teachers, they were mothers, family counselors, banks, taxi drivers, clothing stores, hotels, and the list goes on and on. My mother has had NUMEROUS students return to thank her for what she installed in them...hard work, independence, drive to succeed and preparing them for college. How many of you have that many hats and can attest to being such an intregal part of someone's life? Don't you want the brightest teaching and yes, raising our youth? Do you want the smartest and brightest teaching your child? If you could make more money somewhere else why would you teach? I for one, don't think they make enough!! Give them a raise!!!

I call it like I see it.

Teachers seem to have a problem with non-conformity, it's just so darned inconvenient for them. I loved watching them squirm and if I brought one to tears; SCORE!

This is the problem with people associated with teachers/teaching.

Giving raises to teachers is done with a broad pen. Thus meaning all teachers get raises. All teachers will admit that there are bad teachers. So when you say give teachers a raise you also include the bad teachers.

I have never seen the AEA be proactive in trying to rid this state of bad teachers. The only argument they have is they are not paid enough.

So where is the cry and public stance from teachers and the AEA to make new laws to rid the state of bad teachers. There is none, because none of you are willing to give up anything to get rid of them. Therefore you will all continue to be lumped together.

You are a group that polices itself. And you are doing a piss poor job at it and demanding more money.

Bring up test scores as a whole and start getting rid of teachers that have no right teaching and then start talking about more money.

Don't bring up one instance of a great teacher and pull a Jerry McGuire and yell SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!

Instead of wasting time with your "teachers for sainthood" campaign you should open you eyes and acknowledge there is a problem with some of our educators and work toward ridding the system of those teachers.

I'm more interested in ridding the system of "bad" doctors, lawyers, politicans, police officers. Bad people in every profession, just happens teachers are currently at the whipping post.

Expectations placed on teachers in todays world are insane. As for as I'm concerned, we can't pay these people enough just for showing up for work.
